Early Life
Kaushal was born on 16 May 1988 in a suburb in Mumbai. His dad, Sham Kaushal, works as an action director in Indian movies, while his mom, Veena Kaushal, takes care of their home. His younger brother, Sunny, is also an actor. They come from a Punjabi Hindu family originally from Hoshiarpur. Kaushal calls himself a regular kid who liked studying, playing cricket, and watching movies. Despite his family’s wish for him to have a stable career outside of showbiz, he graduated with an engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications in 2009 from Mumbai’s Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology.
In his final year of college, Kaushal realized he wasn’t interested in a regular office job during an industrial visit to an IT company. He decided to pursue a career in films. While studying acting at Kishore Namit Kapoor’s academy, he also got involved in theatre with Manav Kaul’s Aranya group and Naseeruddin Shah’s Motley Productions, doing various roles behind the scenes. Despite attending auditions for two years without success, Kaushal’s first attempt at acting was in a play called Laal Pencil in 2011.
His film journey began when he worked as an assistant director to Anurag Kashyap in the crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Kaushal has happy memories of working with Kashyap, who he considers his mentor. He then took on minor roles in Kashyap’s productions like Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012) and Bombay Velvet (2015), as well as the short film Geek Out (2013).
Career
Kaushal’s journey in the film industry started with Masaan in 2015, where he played his first main role. Neeraj Ghaywan directed the independent drama, and Kaushal got the part after an audition when Rajkummar Rao couldn’t continue. To prepare for the role of a young man seeking a better life in Benaras, where the film is set, Kaushal observed local people’s behaviors.
Before Masaan, Kaushal worked on Zubaan, a film screened at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival. In this movie, he played a character struggling with grief and stammering. Kaushal’s dedication to the role impressed critics, with Justin Chang of Variety calling him a “charismatic, naturally engaging talent.”
In 2016, Kaushal took on the role of a chain-smoking, drug-addicted police officer in Raman Raghav 2.0, a psychological thriller directed by Anurag Kashyap. Despite the character being quite different from Kaushal’s real self, he committed to the role through isolation and intense preparation.
Kaushal’s breakthrough came in 2018 with Love per Square Foot, Netflix’s first original Indian film. He also starred in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, a spy thriller set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. His performance in Sanju, a biopic of actor Sanjay Dutt, earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2018 Kaushal also appeared in Lust Stories opposite Kiara Advani, Radhika Apte, Bhumi Pednekar, Neil Bhoopalam, Manisha Koirala, Neha Dhupia, Akash Thosar, Jaideep Ahlawat & Sanjay Kapoor, and in Manmarziyaan, directed by Anurag Kashyap with Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Ashnoor Kaur, Saurabh Sachdeva, Arun Bali & Jasmin Bajwa
