Career
Kashyap began his journey in Mumbai in 1993 with only INR 5,000. Struggling financially, he spent months on the streets, finding temporary shelter wherever he could. Eventually, he found work at Prithvi Theatre, but his first play remained incomplete due to the director’s passing.
In 1995, Kashyap’s acquaintance introduced him to Shivam Nair, leading to his involvement in scripting projects like Auto Narayan. He also contributed to the screenplay of Hansal Mehta’s film Jayate and wrote episodes for the TV series Kabhie Kabhie in 1997.
His big break came in 1998 when Manoj Bajpayee recommended him to Ram Gopal Varma. Kashyap co-wrote the acclaimed crime film Satya, which propelled him into the limelight. He continued collaborating with Varma on projects like Kaun and Shool.
In 2000, Kashyap embarked on his directorial journey with Paanch, a crime thriller inspired by real events. Despite facing censorship issues, the film gained recognition for its bold narrative.
Following this, Kashyap worked on projects like Black Friday, a film based on the 1993 Bombay bombings. The movie faced legal challenges but received critical acclaim upon release.
In 2007, he directed No Smoking, an unconventional thriller that divided opinions among viewers and critics. The same year, he ventured into animation with Return of Hanuman.
In 2009, Kashyap had two releases: Dev.D, a modern interpretation of Devdas, and Gulaal, a political drama. Both films received mixed responses at the box office but garnered critical acclaim.
In the following years, Kashyap continued to experiment with his storytelling. He directed segments of anthology films like Mumbai Cutting and Bombay Talkies, showcasing his versatility as a filmmaker.
In 2011, Kashyap directed That Girl in Yellow Boots, a thriller that garnered attention at international film festivals. He followed this success with Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012, a crime saga that earned widespread acclaim.
His subsequent projects included films like Ugly (2014) and Bombay Velvet (2015), which received mixed reviews and faced commercial challenges.
In 2018, Kashyap directed Lust Stories, an anthology film exploring themes of lust from a female perspective. The same year, he co-directed the crime thriller series Sacred Games, which became a global sensation.
In 2020, Kashyap ventured into the horror genre with Ghost Stories and released Choked, a film exploring societal issues through a personal narrative.
In 2022, he directed Dobaaraa, a science fiction thriller, followed by Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, a musical romantic drama, in 2023. Later in 2023, Kashyap wrote and directed Kennedy, a thriller film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Kashyap established his production company, Anurag Kashyap Films, in 2009, with Guneet Monga managing it. The company’s first success came with the critically acclaimed film Udaan (2010), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2011, Kashyap co-founded Phantom Films with Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Madhu Mantena. Their debut production was Lootera (2013), a period romance based on O. Henry’s short story. The film received widespread acclaim.
Following this, Kashyap collaborated with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), a romantic comedy starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra. He also co-edited and co-produced Queen, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
In 2015, Kashyap co-produced NH10 and Hunterrr, both of which were successful. Masaan, another Phantom release that year, received international recognition, winning awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
The dissolution of Phantom Films occurred in October 2018 due to sexual assault allegations against Vikas Bahl. Kashyap, along with the other founders, announced the company’s disbandment and pursued independent projects.
In 2020, Kashyap launched a new production company called Good Bad Films with partners Dhruv Jagasia and Akshay Thakker. Their debut production was Choked.
