Early Life
Katrina Kaif was born on July 16, 1983, in Hong Kong. Her dad, Mohammed Kaif, is a businessman from Kashmir, and her mom, Suzanne Turquotte, is an English lawyer and charity worker. Katrina has seven siblings, three older sisters named Stephanie, Christine, & Natasha, and three younger sisters named Melissa, Sonia, and Isabelle, along with an older brother, Sebastian. When she was a teenager, her parents separated, and her dad moved to the United States.
After the separation, Katrina lived alone in London for three years before coming to India. At just 14, she won a beauty contest in Hawaii, which led to her first modeling job in a jewelry campaign. This brought her recognition.
Career
Katrina Kaif caught the eye of filmmaker Kaizad Gustad during a fashion show. Her first movie was Boom, a Hindi-English heist film with big stars like Amitabh Bachchan and others. She got more offers while filming in India and decided to stay. She changed her surname to her father’s for easier pronunciation. Her modeling career took off after walking the ramp for Rohit Bal and appearing in the first Kingfisher Calendar. Kaif endorsed brands like Coca-Cola, LG, Fevicol, and Samsung, establishing a successful modeling career in India.
Boom (2003) was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival but turned out to be a commercial and critical failure. Kaif’s performance as a supermodel in the Mumbai underworld was not well-received. After Boom, she faced criticism for her poor Hindi and British accent, making filmmakers hesitant to cast her. She worked on improving her language skills through Hindi classes. In 2003, Mahesh Bhatt replaced her in Saaya due to poor acting.
Despite the setback, Kaif appeared in the Telugu film Malliswari (2004) as the titular princess. She received a high salary, becoming the highest-paid female lead in South Indian cinema at the time. Malliswari, despite negative reviews, was a profitable venture. In 2005, she had a brief role in Sarkar and starred in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?, a successful romantic comedy remake. For her role, she received the Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance – Female.
In 2006, Katrina Kaif starred in the film “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye,” directed by Raj Kanwar. This marked the beginning of her frequent collaborations with co-star Akshay Kumar. The movie narrates the love story of two strangers engaged to others. Critics had mixed views, with one mentioning Kaif as “passably competent” but overshadowed by her co-stars. In the same year, she played a role alongside Mammootty in the Malayalam crime thriller “Balram vs. Tharadas.”
Katrina’s career took a positive turn in 2007, featuring in four successful Bollywood hits. One notable film was Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s “Namastey London,” where she played a dominating role. Kaif portrayed Jasmeet Malhotra, a British Indian girl in love with her British boyfriend, despite her parents’ disapproval.
She also had a supporting role as a doctor in the sports drama “Apne” and starred in the comedy “Partner” with Salman Khan & Govinda directed by David Dhawan. The year concluded with the comedy “Welcome,” co-starring Akshay Kumar, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Feroz Khan, Malaika Arora, Suniel Shetty, Vijay Raaz, Mallika Sherawat which, despite negative reviews, became the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2007.
In 2008, Katrina Kaif appeared in three films. She played Saif Ali Khan’s secretary in the action thriller “Race” alongside Bipasha Basu, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna & Sameera Reddy. Her collaboration with Akshay Kumar continued in the action comedy “Singh Is Kinng,” a commercial success. Her final film of the year, “Yuvvraaj,” was a box-office failure, but her portrayal of a girl forbidden from marrying her poor lover received appreciation.
Up to this point, Kaif’s voice was often dubbed in her films due to her limited fluency in Hindi. While her films were financially successful, critics noted her typically playing supporting roles in male-dominated movies. Despite criticism, Kaif defended her choice of glamorous roles, emphasizing her focus on learning without a specific career goal. She also participated in Shah Rukh Khan’s “Temptations Reloaded” world concert tour in 2008, alongside other Bollywood stars.
After featuring in several films where she played glamorous, “arm candy” roles, Katrina Kaif began searching for more meaningful parts. One such opportunity came with Kabir Khan’s terrorism drama “New York” in 2009. Co-starring John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh, the film revolves around the lives of three friends facing challenges post 9/11. Kaif played Maya, a college student who unknowingly marries a terrorist. Having faced racial discrimination in London, Kaif connected with her character’s experiences. “New York” performed well at the box office and received positive reviews, earning Kaif her first Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress.
In the same year, she made a cameo appearance in India’s first underwater thriller, “Blue.” Kaif starred alongside Ranbir Kapoor in the hit comedy “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,” playing an orphan forced into marriage. Her final film of the year was Priyadarshan’s comedy “De Dana Dan.”
In 2010, Kaif appeared in Prakash Jha’s political thriller “Raajneeti” as part of an ensemble cast. Set in Bhopal, the film depicted a fiercely fought election campaign with manipulation, corruption, and treachery. Kaif’s performance as Indu, a politician inspired by Draupadi, received praise. “Raajneeti” was highly successful at the box office.
She collaborated with Akshay Kumar for the sixth time in the slapstick comedy “Tees Maar Khan” in 2010. Despite the film’s poor reception, Kaif’s item number “Sheila Ki Jawani” gained popularity. The following year, she starred with Hrithik Roshan in the critically acclaimed “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” a coming-of-age dramedy about three friends on a bachelor trip. Kaif’s portrayal of Laila, a diving instructor, earned positive reviews.
In 2012, Kaif appeared in the item number “Chikni Chameli” in “Agneepath” and starred in the espionage thriller “Ek Tha Tiger” alongside Salman Khan. The film was a massive box office success, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year.
Later in 2012, Kaif paired with Shah Rukh Khan & Anushka Sharma in Yash Chopra’s “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.” While the film received positive reviews, Kaif’s performance had a mixed reception. Commercially, it was a hit, contributing to its worldwide box office success.
Katrina Kaif’s next film was Siddharth Anand’s “Bang Bang!” in 2014, a remake of the 2010 action comedy “Knight and Day.” In this movie, she portrayed a bank receptionist unwittingly caught up with a secret agent, played by Hrithik Roshan. While the film was commercially successful, some critics were critical of Kaif’s performance. In 2015, her only appearance was in Kabir Khan’s “Phantom,” a Mumbai-based post 26/11 counter-terrorism drama alongside Saif Ali Khan.
Kaif’s releases in 2016, including “Fitoor” and “Baar Baar Dekho,” with Sidharth Malhotra faced commercial failures. “Fitoor,” an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations,” received mixed reviews. Her role in “Baar Baar Dekho” was praised for the energetic dance number “Kala Chashma,” which garnered over one billion views on YouTube. Additionally, she participated in the “Dream Team Tour” in various American cities with other Indian celebrities.
In 2017, Kaif starred opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Anurag Basu’s “Jagga Jasoos,” a comedy-adventure film that faced delays and mixed critical response. She also reunited with Salman Khan in “Tiger Zinda Hai,” the sequel to “Ek Tha Tiger,” which became her highest-grossing release. Her performance as an action heroine received positive feedback.
In 2018, Kaif appeared in “Thugs of Hindostan” and “Zero,” both commercially unsuccessful despite high budgets. For “Zero,” she received critical praise for her portrayal of an alcoholic actress, earning awards and nominations. In 2019, she collaborated with Salman Khan again in the drama “Bharat,” which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.
Her only film in 2020, “Sooryavanshi,” was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and released in November 2021, becoming a box-office success. In 2022, she played a ghost in the comedy horror film “Phone Bhoot.” alongside Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishan Khattar.
Kaif reprised her role as Zoya in “Tiger 3” (2023), part of the YRF Spy Universe, with the film achieving significant success. In 2024, she starred in Sriram Raghavan’s thriller “Merry Christmas” alongside Vijay Sethupathi, receiving positive critical reception despite commercial failure.
