Early Life
Radhika Apte, born on 7 September 1985 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, comes from a Marathi Brahmin family. Her parents were doctors at the Christian Medical College & Hospital in Vellore when she was born. Her father, Dr. Charudutt Apte, later became a neurosurgeon and chairman of Sahyadri Hospital in Pune.
She pursued an Economics and Mathematics degree at Fergusson College in Pune. Growing up in Pune, Radhika initially attended a regular school but later experienced homeschooling with four friends, guided by their parents living in the same building. This unconventional education system aimed to provide an alternative to the regular schooling system and helped boost Radhika’s self-confidence.
During her time in Pune, Radhika Apte trained under Kathak exponent Rohini Bhate for eight years. Her interest in theater grew during this period, leading her to venture into Mumbai to pursue a career in films. Despite facing initial challenges and discouragement, she made her acting debut in the Marathi film “Gho Mala Asala Hawa” in 2009.
After her first film, Radhika continued her journey with projects like “Rakta Charitra,” “Rakta Charitra 2,” and “I Am.” Following her initial stint in Mumbai, she decided to go to London for a year, studying contemporary dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. This experience proved to be transformative, exposing her to a different and liberating professional environment.
While in London, Radhika met Benedict, her future husband, who eventually moved to Pune with her. After a year, she agreed to return to Mumbai. This time, her experience was more positive, and she no longer felt isolated.

Radhika Apte was born on September 7, 1985, in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, into a Marathi Brahmin family. Her parents were doctors at the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, when she was born. Apte pursued Economics and Mathematics at Fergusson College, Pune. During her childhood in Pune, she trained in Kathak under Rohini Bhate for eight years and became involved in theater.
In 2005, Apte made her debut with a small role in the Hindi film “Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!” Actor Rahul Bose recommended her for the Bengali film “Antaheen,” where she played the role of Brinda Roy Menon, a TV journalist. Apte’s performance was praised, earning her recognition.
In 2009, Apte had her first Indian release, “Gho Mala Asla Hava,” and subsequently worked on various projects, including Marathi and Hindi films. In 2010, she played a significant role in Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rakta Charitra” and its sequel. After returning from London, Apte faced challenges in the industry but continued to pursue her passion.
In 2011, Apte appeared in the anthology film “I Am” and “Shor in the City.” In 2012, she collaborated with Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar on “Ha Bharat Majha” and worked in Marathi and Tamil films. In 2013, she was seen in the Bengali film “Rupkatha Noy.” In 2014, she featured in films like “Postcard,” “Pendulum,” “Legend,” and “Vetri Selvan,” achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success.
The year 2015 marked a turning point for Apte with roles in “Badlapur” and “Hunterrr,” gaining widespread recognition. She continued with diverse projects like “Manjhi – The Mountain Man,” “Kaun Kitne Paani Mein,” and “Kabali.”
In 2018, Apte co-starred with Akshay Kumar in “Pad Man,” a comedy-drama based on menstrual hygiene awareness. She received praise for her performance. In 2020, Apte made her directorial debut with the short film “The Sleepwalkers,” which gained recognition at the Palm Springs International ShortFest.
