Manisha Koirala, born into the politically influential Koirala family in Biratnagar, Nepal, grew up surrounded by politics. Her father, Prakash Koirala, was a prominent politician, while her mother, Sushma Koirala, focused on homemaking. She has a brother, Siddharth Koirala, who also ventured into Bollywood. Many of her relatives were notable politicians, including her grandfather and great-uncles, who served as Prime Ministers of Nepal.

Koirala spent her early years in India, primarily in Varanasi, where she attended Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya until Class X. At a young age, she debuted in acting with the Nepali film “Pheri Bhetaula” in 1989. Initially aspiring to be a doctor, she moved to Delhi and studied at the Army Public School. Living independently in Delhi helped her develop strength and independence.

Transitioning from modeling to acting, Koirala moved to Mumbai to pursue her acting career. She made her Hindi film debut with “Saudagar” in 1991, which was a commercial success. However, subsequent films like “First Love Letter,” “Anmol,” and “Dhanwan” did not perform well, earning her the label of a jinx in the industry.

Koirala’s breakthrough came in 1994 with “1942: A Love Story,” directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Despite being a box office flop, her performance garnered critical acclaim and earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards.

In 1995, she ventured into Tamil cinema with “Bombay,” directed by Mani Ratnam. The film received critical acclaim, and Koirala’s portrayal earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. The same year, she starred in “Akele Hum Akele Tum,” which further solidified her position in the industry.

1996 saw Koirala in diverse roles, including a battered wife in “Agni Sakshi,” a comedic role in “Majhdhaar,” and a lead role in “Indian/Hindustani,” which became one of the most expensive Indian films at that time. In 1997, she starred in the thriller “Gupt: The Hidden Truth,” which became a major hit. The following year, she collaborated again with Mani Ratnam for “Dil Se..” opposite Shah Rukh Khan, earning her critical acclaim.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Koirala continued to deliver notable performances in films like “Mann,” “Company,” and “Escape From Taliban.” She also ventured into television hosting and produced films like “Paisa Vasool.”

Her career saw fluctuations in the mid-2000s, with successes like “Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story” and “Bhoot Returns,” along with failures like “Tulsi” and “Sirf.” In 2010, Koirala married Samrat Dahal, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2012. Despite personal challenges, she continued her acting career, appearing in films like “Dear Maya,” “Sanju,” and “99 Songs.”

In 2012, Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, undergoing successful treatment and becoming cancer-free by 2014. Her journey inspired many, and she actively advocates for cancer awareness.
