Dhawan, born on 24 April 1987, is the son of David Dhawan, a film director, and Karuna Dhawan. They are a Punjabi Hindu family. His elder brother, Rohit, is a film director known for his first movie, Desi Boyz, and his uncle, Anil, is an actor. Dhawan completed his HSC education at the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. Later, he pursued a degree in business studies from the Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. Before entering the acting world, he worked as an assistant director to Karan Johar on the film My Name Is Khan (2010).

In 2012, Dhawan made his acting debut with Johar’s teen film Student of the Year, co-starring Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt.
