Early Life

Anushka Sharma was born on May 1, 1988, in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Her dad, Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, works in the army, and her mom, Ashima Sharma, takes care of the home. Anushka’s family home is in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, where her dad lived before joining the army. Anushka’s grandmother, Urmila, still lives there. Anushka spent her early years in Sheela Bhawan on Naishvilla road.

Her dad is from Uttar Pradesh, and her mom is Garhwali. Anushka has an older brother, Karnesh Sharma, who used to be in the Merchant Navy and now produces films. Growing up in a military family played a big role in shaping Anushka. She proudly says, “I am an army officer’s daughter even more than being an actor.”

Although Anushka lived in Bangalore, she went to St. Mary’s School in Margherita, Assam, for her first school. During that time, she was classmates with Sakshi Dhoni, M.S Dhoni‘s wife. Anushka finished her schooling at Army School in Bangalore and studied arts at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.

At first, Anushka wanted to be a model or a journalist, not an actress. After finishing college, she moved to Mumbai to work as a model. She joined Elite Model Management and got guidance from style consultant Prasad Bidapa. Anushka’s first time on the runway was at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2007 for Wendell Rodricks’s Les Vamps Show. Despite her early plans, she found a love for acting, attending auditions, and going to acting school while still modeling.

Career

Anushka Sharma embarked on her acting career with Aditya Chopra’s romantic drama “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” in 2008, starring alongside Shah Rukh Khan. This marked her debut in the film industry, and she demonstrated her dedication by taking a day to prepare for the screen test at the Yash Raj Films studio. Refusing to do an impromptu test, Sharma secured a three-film deal with the prestigious production house.

In her debut film, she portrayed the character of Tani Sahni, a young bride to a middle-aged man played by Khan. While Khalid Mohamed of Hindustan Times found her performance “assured and upright,” Nikhat Kazmi had a differing opinion, stating that she “lacks all chutzpah and can barely hold your attention.” Despite the mixed reviews, the film emerged as a major commercial success, becoming the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Anushka Sharma received Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Female Debut.

Two years later, Sharma took on the leading role in the crime-comedy “Badmaash Company,” directed by Parmeet Sethi and co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Vir Das, and Meiyang Chang. The film, revolving around four underachieving friends who start a scam business enterprise, received mixed reviews.

In 2010, Anushka Sharma completed her three-film contract with Yash Raj Films with the romantic comedy “Band Baaja Baaraat,” directed by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring Ranveer Singh. Her role as Shruti Kakkar, an ambitious middle-class Punjabi girl who starts her own wedding planning business, required her to learn the Punjabi dialect.

Despite doubts about the film’s financial prospects, it turned out to be a sleeper hit, earning positive reviews. Sharma’s performance was particularly praised, with many critics considering it her best work at that time. For her role, she received her second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Moving away from Yash Raj Films, Sharma starred in the drama “Patiala House” (2011), directed by Nikkhil Advani and co-starring Akshay Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Tinnu Anand and Harshdeep Kaur. The film depicted the story of a budding cricketer, played by Kumar, facing challenges in convincing his father of his chosen profession. Sharma’s portrayal of the love interest earned positive reviews, with some considering her a “metaphor for energy.”

The same year, she reunited with Ranveer Singh and director Maneesh Sharma for the comedy-drama “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl.” In this film, she played Ishika Desai, a salesgirl hired to outsmart a conman, portrayed by Singh. Despite mixed reviews, the film achieved moderate success at the box office.

In 2012, Anushka Sharma played a supporting role alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif in Yash Chopra’s “swan song,” the romance “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.” Cast as Akira Rai, a Discovery Channel reporter aspiring to be a documentary filmmaker, Sharma’s performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Continuing her diverse roles, she starred in Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola” (2013), a political satire set in a village in Haryana. Co-starring alongside Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan, and Shabana Azmi, Sharma played the titular role of Bijlee Mandola, a strong-headed girl engaged in a romantic affair despite being promised to another man. The film received positive to mixed reviews, with critics noting Sharma’s occasional stereotyping as a loud and loquacious character.

The year 2014 saw Anushka Sharma in Rajkumar Hirani’s religious satire “PK,” where she played a television journalist who befriends an alien, portrayed by Aamir Khan. In 2013, Sharma ventured into film production by launching her own production company, Clean Slate Filmz. The company’s first release was Navdeep Singh’s thriller “NH10” (2015), where Sharma played the lead role.

The film, screened at the 5th Beijing International Film Festival, depicted the story of a married couple whose lives are endangered after an encounter with a group of criminals. Sharma’s portrayal earned praise for breaking away from her romantic comedy image, and the film achieved success at the box office.

Anurag Kashyap’s period crime drama “Bombay Velvet” (2015) featured Sharma as a jazz singer, Rosie Noronha. Despite mixed critical opinions, Sharma’s performance in the song “Dhadaam Dhadaam” received appreciation. In the same year, she played a supporting role of a dancer aboard a cruise ship in Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble comedy-drama “Dil Dhadakne Do,” opposite Ranveer Singh. The film showcased Sharma’s versatility and earned her Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for her roles in “NH10” and “Dil Dhadakne Do,” respectively.

Reuniting with Yash Raj Films, Sharma starred in “Sultan” (2016), a romantic sports drama directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. She portrayed the role of Aarfa Hussain, a wrestler from Haryana, inspiring the title character played by Salman Khan to take up the sport. Sharma faced initial hesitation due to not fitting the physique stereotype of a wrestler, but her dedicated training and spirited performance were appreciated by critics.

Anushka Sharma achieved further success in 2016 with her lead role in Karan Johar’s romantic drama “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai. Her portrayal of Alizeh Khan, a free-spirited girl in a loveless relationship, received praise for its spikiness and chemistry with Kapoor. With two top-grossing films in 2016, Sharma was ranked as the most successful Bollywood actress of the year by Bollywood Hungama.

Entering the year 2017, Anushka Sharma starred in the fantasy comedy “Phillauri,” where she played a friendly ghost seeking to reunite with her lover. She also sang a song for the film, showcasing her multifaceted talents. Following this, she collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan for the third time in Imtiaz Ali’s “Jab Harry Met Sejal,” a romance about a Gujarati tourist in Europe falling in love with her tour guide. While her performances in these films were praised for their straight-faced comedy, both movies failed to impress at the box office.

In 2018, Sharma’s first film release was the horror film “Pari,” where she not only starred but also produced. The film told the story of Rukhsana, a battered young woman living in the wilderness, rescued by a benevolent man. Despite mixed reviews, Sharma’s performance earned recognition, with critics acknowledging her willingness to take on diverse roles.

The same year, she played a biographer documenting the life of the troubled actor Sanjay Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic “Sanju,” starring Ranbir Kapoor. While the film received praise for its ensemble cast, Sharma’s performance garnered criticism for her appearance and accent.

Teaming up with Yash Raj Films once again, Sharma starred in “Sui Dhaaga” in 2018, a comedy-drama co-starring Varun Dhawan. The film depicted the journey of a poor young couple establishing their small-scale clothing industry. Sharma’s portrayal earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.

Her final film appearance of 2018 was in “Zero,” a drama about a dwarf’s romantic tribulations involving two women, reuniting her with Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. Sharma played a NASA scientist with cerebral palsy, showcasing her commitment to diverse and challenging roles. However, the film turned out to be a commercial failure.

In 2020, Anushka Sharma expanded her footprint in the industry by serving as an executive producer for her company’s crime thriller series “Paatal Lok,” released on Amazon Prime Video. She also produced the horror film “Bulbbul” for Netflix. Critics appreciated her production choices, noting themes of feminism and the paranormal in her projects.

In 2022, as per announcement , Anushka revealed that she would step away from her producing duties at Clean Slate Filmz, with her brother becoming the sole owner of the company. Looking ahead, Anushka Sharma is set to return to acting after a four-year hiatus with a biopic of cricketer Jhulan Goswami, titled “Chakda Xpress,” which will release on Netflix.
