Career
Johny Lever started his career by performing stand-up comedy in musical shows like Tabassum Hit Parade. He gained fame and later joined the group of Kalyanji-Anandji, becoming one of the first stand-up comedians in India.
Even before working at Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Lever was already doing stage performances. Eventually, due to his growing popularity and success in stage shows, he decided to quit HUL in 1981. Lever embarked on numerous world tours and performed alongside Amitabh Bachchan in 1982, catching the attention of actor Sunil Dutt.
Dutt noticed Lever’s talent and offered him his first movie role in “Dard Ka Rishta.” Lever also gained recognition through his comedy cassette called “Hasi Ke Hangame” and appeared in commercials for Kachua chhap incense directed by Shekhar Kapur.
In 1986, Lever performed in a charity show called “Hope 86,” where his talent was recognized by producer Gul Anand, leading to his role in the film “Jalwa” alongside Naseeruddin Shah.
Throughout the 1980s, Lever appeared in several films, including “Tum Par Hum Qurban,” “Dard Ka Rishta,” and “Jalwa.” He continued to expand his repertoire, appearing in over 350 films, including hits like “Baazigar” in the 1990s.
Despite his success in movies, Lever continued to do live shows, showcasing his versatile talent. He became known for his memorable characters like “Babulal” in “Baazigar” and “Chotta Chattri” and “Aslam Bhai” in various films. In the 2010s, Lever ventured into regional cinema, appearing in movies like the Tulu film “Rang,” Tamil film “Anbirkku Alavillai,” and Kannada film “Gara.”
Lever also made significant contributions to television, appearing in shows like “Zabaan Sambhalke,” “Johny Aala Re,” and serving as a judge on the stand-up reality show “Comedy Circus.” In 2017, he joined the cast of “Partners” as Commissioner Googol Chatterjee.
