Early Life
Kajol, born on 5 August 1974 in Bombay (now Mumbai), comes from a family deeply rooted in the Indian film industry. Her mother, Tanuja, is an actress, and her late father, Shomu Mukherjee, was a film director and producer. Kajol’s younger sister, Tanishaa, is also an actress, and her family tree includes prominent figures like her maternal aunt Nutan, maternal grandmother Shobhna Samarth, and great-grandmother Rattan Bai—all connected to Hindi cinema.
On the paternal side, her uncles Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee are film producers, and her grandfathers, Sashadhar Mukherjee and Kumarsen Samarth, were filmmakers. Additionally, Kajol’s cousins Rani Mukerji, Sharbani Mukherjee, and Mohnish Bahl are actors, while Ayan Mukerji is a director.
During her childhood, Kajol considered herself mischievous, stubborn, and impulsive. Her parents separated when she was young, but Kajol felt unaffected as the matter was not discussed at home. Raised by her maternal grandmother, who provided a nurturing environment, Kajol learned independence from her mother. Growing up with influences from both Maharashtrian and Bengali cultures, she celebrates the Durga Puja festival annually with the Mukherjee family.
Kajol attended St. Joseph’s Convent School in Panchgani, where, alongside her studies, she engaged in extracurricular activities like dancing. Her interest in reading fiction began to blossom during her school years, becoming a source of solace during challenging times.
In the early 1990s, Tanuja attempted to launch Kajol as an actress in a film project that eventually got shelved. At sixteen, Kajol got her break in the movie Bekhudi through a stroke of luck when she visited photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha’s studio, who also happened to be involved in the film’s creation. Despite initially planning to return to school after shooting during her summer break, Kajol made the decision to pursue a full-time career in films, a choice she later regretted.
Career
Kajol entered the film industry at the age of seventeen, making her debut in the 1992 romantic drama Bekhudi alongside Kamal Sadanah and her mother Tanuja. The film didn’t fare well at the box office, but Kajol’s performance garnered positive attention. Following this, she starred in Abbas–Mustan’s crime thriller Baazigar (1993), a major success, marking the beginning of her collaborations with Shah Rukh Khan. Despite criticism for her looks, Kajol’s acting skills were acknowledged.
In 1994, she appeared in Udhaar Ki Zindagi, which didn’t perform strongly commercially but earned her the Best Actress (Hindi) title from the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association. After an emotionally challenging experience with Udhaar Ki Zindagi, Kajol opted for lighter films like Hulchul, Gundaraj, and Karan Arjun in 1995.
Kajol had a remarkable 1995 with hits like Karan Arjun and the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, both alongside Shah Rukh Khan. In 1997, she portrayed an obsessive lover turned psychopathic serial killer in Gupt: The Hidden Truth, a role that marked a turning point in her career.
The late 1990s solidified Kajol’s position as a leading actress with successes like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. Kajol received accolades for her roles in Dushman and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, winning her second Best Actress Award at Filmfare.
Kajol made a notable return to films in 2006 with the romantic thriller Fanaa, directed by Kunal Kohli. In the movie, she portrayed Zooni Ali Beg, a blind Kashmiri woman who unintentionally falls in love with a terrorist played by Aamir Khan.
She continued her career with intermittent projects. In 2008, she starred in her husband’s directorial debut, U Me Aur Hum, playing Piya Thapar, a woman dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, she portrayed Mandira, a Hindu single mother, in My Name Is Khan. The film, dealing with post-9/11 discrimination faced by American Muslims, was a global success.
The same year, Kajol appeared in We Are Family, an adaptation of the American drama Stepmom. She played Maya, a character she identified with as a “control freak” in pursuit of perfection. Kajol’s performance garnered positive reviews, and she followed it with the experimental Toonpur Ka Super Hero.
After a brief hiatus, Kajol returned in 2015 with Dilwale, teaming up with Shah Rukh Khan once again. Despite mixed critical reviews, Kajol’s performance received positive comments. In 2016, she made her debut as a producer with the Marathi film Vitti Dandu, which won the Best Marathi Film trophy at the Screen Awards.
In 2017, Kajol starred in Velaiilla Pattadhari 2, her second Tamil-language film. The film received a negative critical response but was a financial success. The following year, she portrayed a helicopter parent in Helicopter Eela, a drama about a mother pursuing education at her son’s college.
In 2020, Kajol expressed her preference for considering the importance of a character over its length. She appeared in Tanhaji, a period drama that became the highest-grossing film of the year. Kajol’s recent project was the social drama Tribhanga (2021), directed by Renuka Shahane and her first collaboration with Netflix. The story revolves around the conflicts between three women from the same family, with Kajol playing the role of Anuradha Apte, a bold Odissi dancer.
In 2022, Kajol starred in Salaam Venky, a drama about euthanasia directed by Revathi. The subsequent year, Kajol appeared in a segment of Netflix’s anthology film Lust Stories 2 and Disney+ Hotstar’s legal drama series, The Trial, adapted from The Good Wife.
