Early Life
Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan was born on 14 March 1965 in Bombay to Tahir Hussain, a film producer, and Zeenat Hussain. He is the eldest of four siblings; a brother, Faisal Khan, and two sisters, Farhat and Nikhat Khan. The family has roots from Herat in Afghanistan, and Khan is a descendant of independence activist Maulana Azad and the former president of India, Zakir Husain.
Several of Khan’s relatives were part of the Hindi film industry, including his late paternal uncle, producer-director Nasir Hussain. Outside of movies, he is related to Abul Kalam Azad through his grandmother. His nephew, Imran Khan, is also a Hindi film actor, and Khan is the second cousin of Najma Heptulla, the 16th Governor of Manipur.
As a child actor, he had minor roles in two films. At eight, he appeared in “Yaadon Ki Baaraat” (1973), the first masala film in Bollywood. The following year, he portrayed a younger character in “Madhosh.” Khan attended various schools in Mumbai, playing tennis in state-level championships and becoming a state-level champion.
He completed his twelfth grade at Narsee Monjee College in Mumbai. Khan’s childhood was challenging due to his father’s financial struggles with unsuccessful film productions. Despite the difficulties, Khan became involved in the experimental process of making a silent film called “Paranoia” at sixteen. This experience fueled his interest in pursuing a career in film.
After joining the theatre group Avantar, Khan worked backstage for over a year before making his stage debut in a small role in the Gujarati play “Kesar Bina” at Prithvi Theatre. He later acted in two Hindi plays and one English play titled “Clearing House.” After high school, Khan chose to discontinue his studies and worked as an assistant director to his father on the Hindi films “Manzil Manzil” and “Zabardast.”
Career
In addition to helping Hussain, Aamir Khan got noticed in documentaries made by students at the Film and Television Institute of India. Director Ketan Mehta noticed him and gave him a role in the low-budget experimental film Holi. Although the film focused on the issue of ragging in India and had a cast of newcomers, it didn’t attract a large audience. Despite playing a rowdy college student in a small role, Khan’s performance was considered lacking finesse.
However, things took a turn when Hussain and his son Mansoor cast Khan as the lead in Mansoor’s directorial debut, “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” (1988), opposite Juhi Chawla. This unrequited love story with parental opposition became a major hit, propelling both Khan and Chawla to stardom. Khan received the Best Male Debut trophy at the Filmfare Awards for his role.
Following this success, Khan starred in the crime thriller “Raakh” (1989), which, despite poor box office performance, earned him critical acclaim and a National Film Award. Later that year, he worked with Chawla again in the romantic comedy “Love Love Love,” which unfortunately was a commercial failure.
In the early 1990s, Khan experienced a mix of successes and failures. The romantic drama “Dil” (1990), opposite Madhuri Dixit, was a huge hit and the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Khan continued his streak with successful films like “Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin” and “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.” However, not all his ventures were successful, and films like “Parampara” and “Time Machine” faced critical and commercial setbacks.
In 1996, Khan’s career saw a significant boost with the blockbuster “Raja Hindustani,” earning him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Despite this success, his career plateaued, with a string of partially successful films. The late 1990s saw films like “Ishq” and “Ghulam,” which performed moderately well at the box office.
In 1999, Khan received acclaim for his roles in “Sarfarosh” and Deepa Mehta’s “Earth.” The following year, “Mela” turned out to be a critical and box office disappointment. However, Khan bounced back in 2001 with the production and lead role in “Lagaan,” which garnered international recognition and a National Film Award. He followed this with “Dil Chahta Hai,” which won the 2001 Filmfare Award for Best Film (Critics).
In 2006, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s “Rang De Basanti” marked Khan’s first film of the year. His performance earned critical acclaim, securing him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. The movie was a box office hit and represented India at the Oscars, even though it didn’t make the final nominee list. Following this, in “Fanaa” (2006), Khan took on the role of a Kashmiri insurgent terrorist, showcasing his versatility.
In 2007, Khan not only acted but also made his directorial debut with “Taare Zameen Par,” a film produced by his own production company. The movie received praise from both critics and audiences for its touching storyline and Khan’s direction. He won several awards, including the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Film of 2007.
From 2008 to 2017, Khan experienced global success. “Ghajini” (2008) became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year, and Khan received accolades for his performance. “3 Idiots” (2009) broke records, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film at the time and gaining popularity in East Asian markets. Khan played a pivotal role in opening up the Chinese market for Indian films, with “3 Idiots” becoming a cult hit there.
Continuing his success, Khan starred in “Talaash: The Answer Lies Within” (2012), a psychological crime thriller that fared well at the box office. He faced the challenge of a demanding role in “Dhoom 3” (2013), which turned out to be the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.
In 2014, Khan wowed audiences as the alien protagonist in Rajkumar Hirani’s “PK,” receiving critical acclaim and becoming the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film ever. In 2016, Khan produced and starred in “Dangal,” portraying wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film received rave reviews, becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film domestically and achieving significant success in China.
In 2017, Khan played a supporting role in his production “Secret Superstar,” which became one of the most profitable films, grossing impressively worldwide on a limited budget.
In November 2018, Aamir Khan joined forces with Amitabh Bachchan in the action-adventure film Thugs of Hindostan. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t receive positive feedback from critics. Produced with a significant budget, it is recognized as one of Bollywood’s costliest films. Despite grossing a substantial amount worldwide, the film fell short of expectations and was considered a box office disappointment.
In March 2019, on his 54th birthday, Aamir Khan shared that his next project would be Laal Singh Chaddha, an adaptation of Forrest Gump. Directed by Advait Chandan, who previously worked with Khan in Secret Superstar, the film had its release on 11 August 2022. However, it received mixed reviews from critics and turned out to be a commercial letdown, earning the label of a “disaster” at the box office.
This marked Khan’s comeback after a four-year break, but unfortunately, Laal Singh Chaddha faced challenges both critically and commercially. Despite the setbacks, Aamir Khan remains a prominent figure in the film industry, known for his diverse roles and significant contributions to Indian cinema.
