Career
In 1999, Sood entered the world of Tamil cinema with movies like Kallazhagar and Nenjinile. He then took on the role of an antagonist in the Telugu film Hands Up! in 2000. His presence expanded with the film Majunu in 2001. Transitioning to Hindi cinema, Sood played Bhagat Singh in Shaheed-E-Azam in 2002, marking his debut in Bollywood. He gained recognition as Abhishek Bachchan’s brother in Mani Ratnam’s Yuva in 2004 and appeared in Aashiq Banaya Aapne in 2005.
His career in Tollywood soared with the release of Super in 2005, where he shared the screen with Nagarjuna, playing a high-tech thief. Athadu followed as his next film in 2005, where he played the antagonist. In 2006, he portrayed the villain in Ashok, which achieved moderate success, contributing to his popularity in Telugu cinema.
In 2009, Sood portrayed the character Pasupathy in Arundhati, a Tollywood film that garnered praise. He then played Rajkumar Sujamal in the Indian epic film Jodha Akbar directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The same year, he took on the role of gangster Bada in Anjaneyulu alongside Ravi Teja. Later in 2009, he acted in another Telugu film, Ek Niranjan, once again playing the antagonist. His career took a significant turn in 2010 when he played the lead antagonist in Abhinav Kashyap’s Dabangg, alongside Salman Khan. He made his Kannada debut in 2011 with Vishnuvardhana, receiving positive reviews for his performance. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed as the “state icon of Punjab” by the state election commission.
In April 2022, Sonu Sood hosted Season 18 of the popular reality show MTV Roadies in South Africa. Reflecting on the experience, he highlighted the show’s unique demand for authenticity, describing it as a constant learning experience during their 45-day stay in South Africa.
