Early Life
Kapoor was born on June 9, 1985, in Chembur, Bombay (now Mumbai), to actor and producer Anil Kapoor and former model and designer Sunita Kapoor. She grew up with her siblings: film producer Rhea and brother Harshvardhan. Kapoor comes from a family deeply rooted in the Indian film industry. Her paternal cousins include actors Arjun Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor, and Mohit Marwah, while her maternal second cousin is actor Ranveer Singh.
The family moved to Juhu when Kapoor was just a month old. She attended Arya Vidya Mandir school in Juhu, where she described herself as a playful and mischievous child who enjoyed sports like rugby and basketball. Kapoor also received training in Kathak, classical music, and Latin dance. Despite her upbringing in Hinduism, she considers herself religious, using it as a reminder to be grateful.
During her teenage years, Kapoor worked briefly as a waitress at the age of 15 but found it challenging. She struggled with health issues, including weight problems, and was diagnosed with insulin resistance and polycystic ovarian disease. Kapoor later became an advocate for diabetes awareness.
For her pre-university education, Kapoor attended the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore, focusing on theater and arts. She then began courses in economics and political science through the University of Mumbai’s correspondence program. Kapoor briefly studied at the University of East London before returning to Mumbai.
Her journey into the film industry began when family friend and actress Rani Mukerji visited them in Singapore while working on the film “Black” in 2005. Kapoor, originally aspiring to be a director and writer, expressed interest in working on the film crew. With her father’s recommendation, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali appointed her as his assistant, marking her entry into the world of cinema.
Career
During her teenage years, Kapoor worked briefly as a waitress but grappled with health issues, including weight problems and hormonal disorders. Her struggle led her to become an advocate for diabetes awareness. She pursued education in Singapore and Mumbai before delving into the film industry.
Kapoor’s interest in acting sparked during her tenure as an assistant to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the making of “Black.” In 2007, Kapoor made her acting debut in Bhansali’s “Saawariya,” with Ranbir Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Salman Khan, Zohra Sehgal, Begum Para and Vibha Chibber.
Over the years, Kapoor starred in a variety of films, ranging from romantic comedies like “I Hate Luv Storys” to ensemble dramas like “Aisha.” Despite some commercial successes, Kapoor faced criticism for her performances in films like “Thank You” and “Mausam.”
Her career trajectory shifted with the release of “Raanjhanaa” in 2013, where she received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Zoya Haider. The film’s success marked a turning point, earning Kapoor her first Filmfare nomination and solidifying her position in the industry.
Kapoor continued to impress with roles in films like “Neerja,” where she played the titular character, and “Pad Man,” showcasing her versatility and commitment to socially relevant projects. Her performances garnered critical acclaim and awards recognition.
In her personal life, Kapoor tied the knot with businessman Anand Ahuja in 2018, followed by notable film appearances in “Veere Di Wedding” and “Sanju.” Despite her success, Kapoor faced setbacks with films like “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga” and “The Zoya Factor.”
In August 2022, Kapoor welcomed her first child, signaling a shift in priorities towards motherhood. However, she remains committed to her career, making a comeback with the digital release of “Blind” in 2023.
