Early Life

Ranveer Singh, born on July 6, 1985, in Mumbai, India, comes from a Sindhi family. His grandparents moved to Mumbai from Karachi, Pakistan, during the Partition of India. He has an older sister named Ritika Bhavnani. Singh’s grandmother, Chand Burke, was a character actress, and he is related to actor Anil Kapoor’s family through Anil’s wife, Sunita Kapoor. Singh dropped his surname “Bhavnani” because he thought it was too long and complicated. He wanted a simpler name for his acting career.

From a young age, Singh dreamed of becoming an actor and participated in school plays and debates. However, when he joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, he realized that breaking into the film industry was challenging. Thinking acting was too difficult, he focused on creative writing. He later went to the United States and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications from Indiana University Bloomington in 2008. While there, he took acting classes and chose theatre as his minor.

After completing his studies and returning to Mumbai in 2007, Singh worked in advertising as a copywriter for agencies like O&M and J. Walter Thompson. He also briefly worked as an assistant director but left to pursue acting. Despite facing challenges and rejection in auditions, he persevered and sent his portfolio to directors, determined to make a mark in the film industry. Singh’s journey was tough, but he stayed dedicated to his dream.

Career

In 2010, Ranveer Singh auditioned for a main role in Maneesh Sharma’s film “Band Baaja Baaraat,” a romantic comedy by Yash Raj Films. Impressed by his audition, producer Aditya Chopra cast him opposite Anushka Sharma. Singh played Bittoo Sharma, a typical Delhi boy. To prepare, he spent time with students at Delhi University.

Despite concerns about the film’s commercial appeal, “Band Baaja Baaraat” became a sleeper hit. Singh’s performance earned him praise, and he won the Best Male Debut award at the Filmfare Awards.

After this success, Singh signed up for “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl,” alongside Parineeti Chopra, Anushka Sharma & Sanaya Irani in another romantic comedy. In this film, Singh played Ricky Bahl, a conman who finally meets his match. The movie received mixed reviews, but Singh’s performance was appreciated. Singh then starred in Vikramaditya Motwane’s period romance “Lootera” in 2013, alongside Sonakshi Sinha.

Next, he played the lead role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela” alongside Deepika Padukone. The film, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, received positive reviews, and Singh’s performance was praised. It became his biggest commercial success at that time. In 2014, Singh appeared in Ali Abbas Zafar’s “Gunday” as a Bengali criminal. The film was commercially successful, and Singh’s chemistry with co-star Arjun Kapoor received acclaim.

In the following years, Singh continued to work in various films, including Zoya Akhtar’s “Dil Dhadakne Do” (2015) alongside Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Shefali Shah, Anushka Sharma, Rahul Bose & Vikrant Massey amongst others, then in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani” (2015), and Aditya Chopra’s “Befikre” (2016). In 2018, he portrayed Alauddin Khilji in Bhansali’s “Padmaavat,” facing controversies but receiving praise for his performance. The film became his highest-grossing release.

In 2019, Singh starred in Zoya Akhtar’s “Gully Boy,” a musical inspired by street rappers Divine and Naezy. The film received widespread acclaim and won numerous awards, including Singh’s Best Actor award at the Filmfare. From 2020 onwards, Singh continued his journey with films like “Sooryavanshi” (2021), “83” (2021), “Jayeshbhai Jordaar” (2022), and “Cirkus” (2022). In 2023, he appeared in Karan Johar’s “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” earning praise for his performance.

Personal Life

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who co-starred in “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,” started dating in August 2012. In October 2018, the couple announced their plans to get married. They had traditional Konkani Hindu and Sikh Anand Karaj ceremonies at Lake Como, Italy, the following month.

Singh has been consistently featured in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list since 2012, reaching the seventh position in 2019. In that year, Forbes estimated his annual earnings to be ₹1.18 billion (US$15 million), making him the fifth-highest-paid actor in the country. He has also been recognized by GQ as one of the 50 most influential young Indians in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, India Today listed him among the nation’s 50 most powerful people, and in 2023, he was featured in a similar list by The Indian Express.

Apart from acting, Singh launched his own record label, IncInk, in 2019, to support local musicians. He is associated with several brands, including Adidas, Head & Shoulders, Ching’s, Jack & Jones, Thums Up, and MakeMyTrip. Singh is also an investor in Sugar Cosmetics, a start-up by Vineeta Singh. His brand value was estimated by Duff & Phelps to be US$63 million in 2019, making him the fourth-highest among Indian celebrities. In 2022, he reached the second position with a brand value of US$158.3 million.

Known for his bold fashion sense, Singh made headlines in July 2022 for a nude photoshoot in Paper magazine. The pictures went viral, leading to police complaints. In August 2022, Mumbai Police summoned him for questioning. Interestingly, one of the images was later used as the cover artwork for the song “Goodbye Evergreen” in Sufjan Stevens’s 2023 album, Javelin.

Adding to his achievements, in December 2023, a life-size wax figure of Singh was installed at Madame Tussauds museums in London and Singapore.
