Early Life
Kangna Amardeep Ranaut was born on March 23, 1987, in Bhambla (now Surajpur), a small town in Himachal Pradesh. She comes from a Rajput family, with her mother Asha being a school teacher and her father Amardeep a businessman. Kangana has an elder sister, Rangoli Chandel, who manages her affairs, and a younger brother named Akshat. Her family has a political background, with her great-grandfather being a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Growing up in a joint family in their ancestral mansion in Bhambla, Kangana describes her childhood as simple and happy. She was known for being stubborn and rebellious, questioning stereotypes and experimenting with fashion from a young age.
Kangana attended DAV School in Chandigarh, pursuing science as her main subject. Despite initial aspirations of becoming a doctor, a setback in her twelfth-grade chemistry test made her reconsider her career path. Her decision not to pursue medicine led to conflicts with her parents, and she decided to move to Delhi at the age of sixteen in search of freedom.
In Delhi, Kangana initially explored modeling but found it lacking in creativity. Eventually, she shifted her focus to acting and joined the Asmita Theatre Group under the guidance of director Arvind Gaur. Her positive experience in theatre, including a moment where she improvised a male actor’s role during a performance, inspired her to pursue a career in films.
Facing financial struggles, Kangana resisted her father’s financial support, leading to strained family relations. Despite disapproval from relatives regarding her choice of a career in the film industry, she reconciled with them after the release of “Life in a… Metro” in 2007..
Career
In 2004, Kangana Ranaut was set to make her film debut in “I Love You Boss” directed by Deepak Shivdasani. However, destiny had other plans for her when she auditioned for Anurag Basu’s “Gangster: A Love Story.” Initially considered too young for the role, she later replaced Chitrangada Singh and, at just seventeen, played Simran, an alcoholic caught in a romantic triangle. The film was a hit, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Her next venture, “Woh Lamhe…” (2006), depicted the life of actress Parveen Babi. Ranaut found it emotionally draining, though critics lauded her expressive performance. Unfortunately, the film didn’t fare well at the box office. The musical thriller “Shakalaka Boom Boom” (2007) faced production issues, and despite a strong ensemble cast, it flopped.
Anurag Basu and Ranaut collaborated again in “Life in a… Metro” (2007), where she played Neha, a socialite having an affair. Although the film had a slow start, it became profitable, earning her a Stardust Award.
In “Fashion” (2008), Ranaut portrayed Shonali Gujral, a struggling supermodel with a substance abuse problem. The film was a commercial success, grossing ₹600 million worldwide. Ranaut’s performance garnered praise, earning her the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
From 2009 to 2012, Ranaut experienced career fluctuations. While “Raaz: The Mystery Continues” (2009) succeeded, films like “Vaada Raha” and “Ek Niranjan” received little attention. She expressed dissatisfaction with her small role in “Kites” (2010) and sought lighter projects, but films like “No Problem” and “Double Dhamaal” failed to revive her career.
In 2011, “Tanu Weds Manu” marked a turning point. Ranaut played Tanuja Trivedi, a spirited student entering an arranged marriage. The film received mixed reviews, but her performance earned nominations and showcased her versatility.
Subsequent films in 2011, apart from “Double Dhamaal,” didn’t perform well. Ranaut admitted accepting some for financial reasons. She rebounded in 2013 with “Krrish 3,” earning praise despite criticisms of the film’s originality.
“Queen” (2014) was a game-changer, featuring Ranaut as Rani on a solo honeymoon. The film and her performance received acclaim, earning her the Filmfare and National Film Award for Best Actress.
Following successes like “Tanu Weds Manu Returns” (2015), she appeared in films like “Rangoon” (2017) and “Simran” (2017). Although praised, these films failed at the box office.
In 2019, Ranaut won her fourth National Film Award for “Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi” and “Panga” (2020). “Judgementall Hai Kya” (2019) underperformed, with high production costs cited as a reason.
Entering the new decade, Ranaut starred in “Panga” (2020), a sports drama where she portrayed former kabaddi champion Jaya Nigam. The film received positive reviews, highlighting Ranaut’s sensitive performance.
In 2021, she starred in the biopic “Thalaivii,” portraying J. Jayalalithaa, and founded her production company, Manikarnika Films. Despite mixed reviews, her performance gained acclaim.
Ranaut faced setbacks in 2022 with “Dhaakad,” marking her eighth consecutive box-office failure. Her production “Tiku Weds Sheru” and “Chandramukhi 2” received criticism for content and performance.
Her 2023 release, “Tejas,” portraying an Indian Air Force pilot, had mixed reviews and modest box office returns. Currently, Ranaut is set to direct “Emergency,” a film about the 1977 Indian Emergency, and reunite with R. Madhavan in an untitled psychological thriller.
