Early Life
Priyanka Chopra was born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), to Ashok and Madhu Chopra, both doctors in the Indian Army. Her father was a Punjabi Hindu from Ambala, and her mother, Madhu Chopra, was a Bihari-Magahi Hindu from Jharkhand. Madhu Chopra is the eldest daughter of Dr. Manohar Kishan Akhouri, a former Congress veteran, and Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri, a former member of Bihar Legislative Assembly.
Priyanka has a younger brother named Siddharth. She comes from a diverse family background, with her maternal grandmother having Malayali Jacobite Syrian Christian roots from Kerala. Priyanka’s family was frequently relocated due to her parents’ military professions, and she attended various schools across India, including in Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Pune.
Priyanka, along with her cousins Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra, and Mannara Chopra, moved around a lot during her childhood. Despite the challenges of changing schools, she embraced the experience as a way to explore India’s multicultural society.
At the age of 13, Priyanka moved to the United States to study, living with her aunt. She attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During her time in the U.S., she participated in theatre productions and studied Western classical music. However, she also faced instances of racial bullying.
After three years in the United States, Priyanka returned to India, completing her senior year of high school at the Army Public School in Bareilly. During her teenage years, she won the local May Queen beauty pageant, gaining attention and admirers. Her mother entered her in the Femina Miss India contest of 2000, where she finished second but won the title of Femina Miss India World.
Subsequently, Priyanka won the Miss World pageant in 2000, making her the fifth Indian contestant to achieve this honor. This marked a turning point in her life, and she began receiving offers for film roles. Her journey wasn’t without challenges, as she faced depression after a nasal surgery in 2001. Despite the difficulties, corrective surgeries helped her regain confidence in her appearance.
Career
After winning the Miss India World title, Priyanka Chopra was initially set to make her film debut in the romantic thriller “Humraaz” (2002). Unfortunately, the project fell through due to conflicting schedules and other commitments. However, she eventually made her screen debut in the 2002 Tamil film “Thamizhan” opposite Vijay. Although the film received positive reviews for its wit and dialogue, Chopra’s role was considered limited in terms of acting.
In 2003, Chopra made her Bollywood debut with “The Hero: Love Story of a Spy,” alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. The film, set against the backdrop of the Indian Army in Kashmir, was a commercial success but received mixed reviews. Despite this, Chopra’s screen debut was acknowledged. She followed it up with “Andaaz,” a box-office hit, for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
In 2004, her films “Plan,” “Kismat,” and “Asambhav” performed poorly at the box office, and Chopra was often cast for her “glamour quotient” in forgettable roles. However, her luck changed with the success of “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” alongside Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Later in 2004, her role as an antagonist in “Aitraaz” earned her critical acclaim, a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role, and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
The years 2005 and 2006 marked Chopra’s rise to prominence. Despite the mixed reception of films like “Blackmail” and “Karam,” she received praise for her performance in “Waqt: The Race Against Time.” Her roles in “Yakeen,” “Barsaat,” and “Bluffmaster!” showcased her versatility, earning her recognition and box-office success.
In 2006, Chopra starred in the blockbuster “Krrish” alongside Hrithik Roshan. The film’s success solidified her status in the industry. However, films like “Aap Ki Khatir” and “Drona” received mixed to negative reviews.
Chopra’s career faced setbacks in 2007 with films like “Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love” and “Big Brother” failing at the box office. In 2008, “Love Story 2050” and “God Tussi Great Ho” were also poorly received. “Drona” marked her sixth consecutive box-office failure. The turning point came with Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion” in 2008. Chopra’s portrayal of the ambitious supermodel earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actress. The film was both a commercial and critical success.
Her final film of 2008, “Dostana,” was a financial success, and Chopra’s performance in both “Fashion” and “Dostana” earned her the Stardust Award for Actor of the Year – Female. In retrospect, “Fashion” is considered a milestone in Chopra’s career, paving the way for female-centric films in Bollywood. Despite initial setbacks, she emerged stronger, proving her acting prowess and versatility in various genres.
