Career
Jennifer Lopez’s first professional job came in 1989 when she toured Europe for five months with the musical revue show “Golden Musicals of Broadway.” She was upset at being the only chorus member without a solo, which motivated her to work harder and commit more to her career. In 1990, she danced alongside MC Hammer in an episode of “Yo! MTV Raps” and spent four months in Japan as a chorus member in “Synchronicity.” Upon returning to the U.S., she was hired as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block’s performance at the 1991 American Music Awards. She also toured America with regional productions of “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Oklahoma!” and danced in music videos including Doug E. Fresh’s “Summertime” and EPMD’s “Rampage.”
Lopez’s most high-profile job as a dancer was as a Fly Girl on the sketch comedy television series “In Living Color.” She moved to Los Angeles in late 1991 for the job, filming during the day and attending acting classes at night. Despite feeling ostracized by the other Fly Girls, her career progressed. She left “In Living Color” to work as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and appeared in the music video for “That’s the Way Love Goes.” Although she was scheduled to tour with Jackson, she chose to pursue an acting career instead, hiring “In Living Color” producer Eric Gold as her manager.
Lopez’s first professional acting job was a small recurring role on the television show “South Central” in 1994. She was then cast in the CBS show “Second Chances,” which led to her being cast in its spin-off “Hotel Malibu.” She appeared in the television film “Lost in the Wild” and received her first major movie role in Gregory Nava’s 1995 drama “Mi Familia,” earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress. Lopez then starred in the action comedy “Money Train” in 1995 and had a supporting role in the 1996 comedy “Jack” directed by Francis Ford Coppola. She also starred opposite Jack Nicholson in the neo-noir thriller “Blood and Wine.”
Lopez’s breakthrough came with her casting as Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in the biopic “Selena” (1997), making her the first Latina actress to earn $1 million for a film. Her performance received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. Later in 1997, she starred in the horror film “Anaconda” and the crime film “U Turn.” In 1998, she starred opposite George Clooney in “Out of Sight,” earning rave reviews for her performance. She also voiced a character in the animated film “Antz” and became a spokesperson for Coca-Cola and L’Oréal.
After working on “Selena,” Lopez decided to pursue a music career. Her debut album “On the 6” (1999) was a success, with her debut single “If You Had My Love” topping the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks. Another single, “Waiting for Tonight,” reached number eight and became a celebratory anthem for the new millennium. Other singles from the album included “Let’s Get Loud” and “No Me Ames,” a duet with future husband Marc Anthony. In July 1999, she performed at the FIFA Women’s World Cup closing ceremony, watched by over one billion viewers worldwide, further boosting her music career.
