Career
In 1978, at the age of 8, Naomi Campbell made her first public appearance in Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” music video. Over the next few years, she continued to appear in music videos, including Culture Club’s “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” in 1983 and “Mistake Number 3” in 1984. Despite her early success in the entertainment industry, Campbell had originally intended to pursue a career in dance, having studied it from age 3 to 16.
In 1986, while still a student at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, Campbell was discovered by Beth Boldt, head of the Synchro Model Agency. Shortly before her 16th birthday, she graced the cover of British Elle in April 1986. This marked the beginning of her professional modeling career.
Throughout the late 1980s, Campbell walked the runway for renowned designers such as Gianni Versace, Azzedine Alaïa, and Isaac Mizrahi. Alongside Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, Campbell formed a trio known as the “Trinity,” becoming the most recognizable and in-demand models of their generation. Despite facing racial discrimination, Campbell received support from her white friends, who advocated for her inclusion in fashion shows and magazines.
In December 1987, Campbell made history by becoming the first black cover girl for British Vogue since 1966. She continued to break barriers by appearing on the cover of French Vogue in August 1988 and American Vogue in September 1989. Campbell’s success solidified her status as a supermodel, alongside Turlington, Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer, collectively known as the “Big Six.”
Throughout the 1990s, Campbell’s career reached new heights. She starred in George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” music video alongside her fellow supermodels and appeared as Michael Jackson’s love interest in the music video for “In the Closet.” Campbell also made notable appearances in Madonna’s book “Sex” and walked the catwalk for Versace with her fellow supermodels.
Despite her success, Campbell faced challenges in the mid-1990s, including being dropped by Elite Model Management. However, she continued to diversify her career, branching out into other areas of the entertainment industry. She released a novel titled “Swan” in 1994 and an album called “Baby Woman” in the same year. While her album achieved moderate success in Japan, it was met with criticism from critics.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Campbell remained a prominent figure in the fashion world, appearing on magazine covers, walking the runway, and launching her fragrance line. She also ventured into television, hosting the Miss Universe pageant and making guest appearances on various shows.
Throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, Campbell continued to make strides in the fashion industry, appearing in campaigns for top brands and walking the runway for prestigious fashion shows. She also expanded her presence in the entertainment industry, appearing in television shows and music videos.
In recent years, Campbell has been involved in philanthropic work and activism, receiving recognition for her contributions to various causes. She has also delved into digital media, launching her own web series on YouTube called “No Filter with Naomi.” Campbell’s influence in the fashion world has been further recognized through exhibitions and awards, cementing her legacy as one of the most iconic supermodels of all time.
