Career
In 1990, Combs started as an intern at Uptown Records in New York, where he played a role in developing artists like Jodeci and Mary J. Blige. His knack for throwing parties gained him attention even during his college days. One event in 1991 turned tragic when an AIDS fundraiser he organized at City College of New York became overcrowded, resulting in a stampede that claimed nine lives.
After leaving Uptown in 1993, he founded his own label, Bad Boy Records, and quickly signed talent like the Notorious B.I.G. and Craig Mack. Bad Boy Records saw immediate success with hits like “Ready to Die” in 1994.
Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, released his debut album “No Way Out” in 1997, which topped the charts with hits like “I’ll Be Missing You,” a tribute to Notorious B.I.G. The album earned him critical acclaim and several Grammy nominations. Throughout the late 1990s, he faced criticism for commercializing hip-hop too much, but continued to produce successful music.
In 1999, Combs faced legal troubles after an altercation with Steve Stoute of Interscope Records. Despite this, he released his second solo album, “Forever,” which received mixed reviews. In 2001, Combs changed his stage name to P. Diddy and continued to explore various ventures, including acting and producing.
His third studio album, “The Saga Continues,” released in 2001, was the last under the P. Diddy name. Combs also ventured into reality TV with “Making the Band,” where he created musical acts.
Combs made headlines in 2004 with his “Vote or Die” campaign during the presidential election. In 2005, he changed his stage name again to simply “Diddy” due to confusion among fans. He continued to expand his portfolio, including ventures into film and hosting the MTV Video Music Awards.
Combs released his fourth album, “Press Play,” in 2006, which debuted at number one on the charts. He continued to collaborate with various artists and explore different genres. In 2009, he formed the group Diddy – Dirty Money, releasing their debut album “Last Train to Paris” in 2010.
Combs continued to be active in both music and acting, making appearances in TV shows and films. In 2014, he returned to using the stage name Puff Daddy for his mixtape “MMM.” In 2016, Combs announced plans for a final album and tour before retiring from the music industry to focus on acting.
He continued to make headlines with various projects, including executive producing Burna Boy’s album “Twice as Tall” in 2020 and hosting the Billboard Music Awards in 2022. Later in 2022, Combs announced the launch of his new record label, Love Records, and released his sixth studio album, “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” in 2023.
