Career
In 1987, Rahman, then known as Dileep, began composing jingles for advertisements and television channels, including the iconic Titan Watches jingle using Mozart’s Symphony no.25 theme. In 1992, he ventured into film scoring with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film “Roja,” marking the beginning of his illustrious career.
Rahman established Panchathan Record Inn, a state-of-the-art studio in his backyard, which quickly became one of India’s most advanced recording studios. His breakthrough came with “Roja,” earning him the National Film Award for Best Music Director. He continued to deliver successful scores for Tamil films, including “Bombay,” “Gentleman,” and “Kadhalan.”
His innovative blend of Western classical music, traditional Tamil and folk music, jazz, and rock garnered international attention. The soundtrack for “Bombay” sold millions worldwide and featured the iconic “Bombay Theme.”
Rahman’s Bollywood debut came with “Rangeela,” followed by successful scores for “Dil Se..” and “Taal,” featuring the popular song “Chaiyya Chaiyya.” He expanded his studio, establishing AM Studios in 2005.
