Early Life
Akshay Kumar was born in Old Delhi, India, to Hari Om Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia, belonging to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father served in the army, and Kumar’s early years in Delhi were marked by a keen interest in sports. Raised in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, the family later relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai) when Kumar’s father transitioned from the army to work with UNICEF.
Growing up in Koliwada, a Punjabi community in Central Bombay, Kumar attended Don Bosco High School in Matunga. Despite enrolling in Guru Nanak Khalsa College for higher education, he dropped out as his passion lay elsewhere. Expressing a keen interest in martial arts, Kumar sought his father’s support to further his training. Saving up, his father sent him to Thailand, where Kumar lived for five years, mastering Thai Boxing.
After earning a black belt in Taekwondo in India, Kumar continued his martial arts education in Bangkok, learning Muay Thai. He worked various jobs, including as a chef and waiter. Returning to Bombay, he briefly engaged in the family business, teaching martial arts. A chance encounter with the world of modeling altered his trajectory. Initially working as a model and background dancer in films, Kumar’s introduction to acting came through a bit role as a Karate instructor in the film “Aaj.”
Changing his name to Akshay Kumar, he made a conscious shift to acting after being signed for a lead role in the movie “Deedar” by producer Pramod Chakravarthy. This marked the beginning of Akshay Kumar’s journey in the world of Indian cinema.
Career
Akshay Kumar began his journey as a lead actor in 1991 with the film “Saugandh,” co-starring Raakhee and Shantipriya. The same year, he appeared in “Dancer,” directed by Kishore Vyas, which received mixed reviews. However, 1992 marked a turning point in his career with the suspense thriller “Khiladi,” directed by Abbas Mustan, widely recognized as his breakthrough role.
The Indian Express praised “Khiladi” as an engrossing thriller, applauding Kumar’s impressive lead performance for his physical appearance, strong screen presence, and ease in the role. His 1992 releases also included the detective film “Mr. Bond” and “Deedar,” which did not fare well at the box office.
In 1993, Kumar starred in the bilingual film “Ashaant” alongside Dr. Vishnuvardhan and Ashwini Bhave, but none of his films that year achieved commercial success. The following year, he appeared in 11 feature films, gaining recognition for his roles in the highest-grossing films “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” and “Mohra.” The romance “Yeh Dillagi” with Kajol also earned him critical acclaim and nominations for Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Awards.
The success continued in 1994 with hits like “Suhaag” and the action film “Elaan,” establishing Kumar as one of the most successful actors of the year. He went on to achieve further success with the Khiladi series, starring in “Sabse Bada Khiladi” (1995) and “Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi” (1996).
Kumar played a supporting role in Yash Chopra’s “Dil To Pagal Hai” (1997) and starred in “Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi,” the fifth installment of the Khiladi series. Although the latter didn’t fare well commercially, Kumar’s performance in the romantic action film “Aflatoon” received praise.
Despite setbacks in some of his subsequent releases, Kumar made a strong comeback with the commercial success of “Jaanwar” in 1999. His roles in “Sangharsh” and “Jaanwar” received critical acclaim, marking a significant phase in his film career.
In the year 2000, Akshay Kumar starred in the comedy film “Hera Pheri,” directed by Priyadarshan, alongside Paresh Rawal and Suneil Shetty. The movie, a remake of the Malayalam film “Ramji Rao Speaking,” achieved commercial success and marked a turning point in Kumar’s career. The Hindustan Times praised the film’s portrayal of the surreal aspects of human life.
Later that same year, Kumar featured in the romantic drama “Dhadkan,” directed by Dharmesh Darshan. While the film had a moderate performance at the box office, Kumar received acclaim for his acting. Rediff.com’s review highlighted his dedication to the role, stating that he had proven himself as a “director’s actor.”
In the action thriller “Khiladi 420,” directed by Neeraj Vora, Kumar performed daring stunts, such as climbing a running plane and jumping onto a hot air balloon. Despite mixed reviews for his dual-role character, some critics praised his performance, considering it the best of his career.
Moving into 2001, Kumar’s first release was the drama “Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love,” directed by Suneel Darshan. He received praise for his performance in the film. He then took on a negative role in the Abbas-Mustan-directed “Ajnabee.” Rediff.com called him the “surprise package” of the film, and Kumar won his first Filmfare Award for Best Villain for this role.
In 2002, Kumar starred in the romantic drama “Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya” and played a blind man in the heist film “Aankhen,” receiving critical acclaim for his performance. His versatility continued with the comedy “Awara Paagal Deewana” but received mixed reviews compared to his previous work.

The subsequent years showcased Kumar’s diverse roles, including family dramas like “Waqt: The Race Against Time” (2005) and comedies like “Phir Hera Pheri” (2006). His comedic role in “Garam Masala” earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Comedian.

His performance in the film even earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare Awards. Kumar’s chemistry with lead actress Katrina Kaif was widely appreciated.
The subsequent releases of 2007, namely Sajid Khan’s “Heyy Babyy” and Priyadarshan’s “Bhool Bhulaiyaa,” continued the trend of box office successes. Both films, in which Kumar starred opposite Vidya Balan, received positive responses. The year concluded with the blockbuster hit “Welcome,” directed by Anees Bazmee, marking Kumar’s fifth successive hit.
In 2008, Kumar returned to the Yash Raj Films banner after 11 years with “Tashan,” directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. However, the film under-performed at the box office. His subsequent release, “Singh Is Kinng,” directed by Anees Bazmee and co-starring Katrina Kaif, achieved tremendous success, breaking previous records. 2008 also marked Kumar’s foray into television as he debuted as the host of the popular show “Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi,” later returning for the second season in 2009.
In 2009, Kumar starred in various films, including “Chandni Chowk to China,” which faced critical and commercial setbacks, and “Kambakkht Ishq,” a comedy shot at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Despite negative reviews, the film performed well economically. The following years saw a mix of successes and failures for Kumar. “Housefull” (2010) and “Desi Boyz” (2011) were box office hits, while films like “Khatta Meetha” (2010) received mixed reviews.
In 2011, Kumar also ventured into film production with “Breakaway,” co-produced with Russell Peters. This cross-cultural movie became the highest-grossing of its kind in Canada that year. Moreover, Kumar contributed to the Hindi version of Hollywood blockbuster “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” providing the voice for Optimus Prime for free, as it was for his son, Aarav.
In 2012, Akshay Kumar kicked off the year with “Housefull 2,” a sequel to the earlier comedy film “Housefull,” which turned out to be a superhit. Following that success, he starred in Prabhudeva’s action drama “Rowdy Rathore,” playing a double role opposite Sonakshi Sinha. The film earned over ₹1.3 billion (US$24.33 million) in India, achieving box office success. Kumar founded another production company, Grazing Goat Pictures Pvt Ltd., in the same year.
Joker was initially promoted as Kumar’s 100th film, but he clarified later that this milestone had been reached before his involvement in “Joker.” He distanced himself from the film’s promotion due to disagreements with the director, Shirish Kunder. Kumar’s subsequent release, “Oh My God,” which he produced and starred in alongside Paresh Rawal, gained momentum through word of mouth. His last release in 2012 was “Khiladi 786,” the eighth installment in the Khiladi series.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kumar’s only release was the horror comedy “Laxmii.” In 2021, he appeared in “Bell Bottom,” “Sooryavanshi,” and “Atrangi Re.” In 2022, “Bachchhan Paandey” received negative reviews, while “Rakshabandhan” had mixed responses.
“Samrat Prithviraj” (2022) faced criticism for Kumar’s portrayal of the historical figure, and “Rakshabandhan” had a lukewarm reception. In 2023, Kumar had mixed results with “Selfiee,” a remake of “Driving Licence,” and “OMG 2 – Oh my God 2,” a spiritual successor to “OMG – Oh My God!,” which turned out to be a box office success.
