Rishi Kapoor, born into a renowned film family, made his first on-screen appearance as a child in his father Raj Kapoor’s film “Shree 420” in 1955. He had a cameo in the musical sequence “Pyaar Hua, Iqraar Hua Hai.”
His official debut came in 1970 with his father’s film “Mera Naam Joker,” where he portrayed the young version of the lead character. Rishi won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his performance. In 1973, he landed his first leading role in the teenage romance “Bobby,” directed by his father. The film was a massive hit and earned Rishi the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Throughout the 1970s, Rishi Kapoor starred in several successful comedies like “Khel Khel Mein” (1975) and “Rafoo Chakkar” (1975). He also appeared in multi-starrer hits like “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977) and “Hum Kisise Kum Naheen” (1977).
Rishi collaborated with actress Neetu Singh for the first time in “Zahreela Insaan” (1974) and went on to share the screen with her in various projects, eventually marrying her in 1980. In 1980, Rishi starred in Subhash Ghai’s “Karz,” which became a cult classic. His role as Devdhar in “Prem Rog” (1982) earned him critical acclaim and a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor.
In the mid-1980s, Rishi reunited with Dimple Kapadia in “Saagar” (1985), twelve years after “Bobby.” He also appeared in notable films like “Ek Chadar Maili Si” (1986) and Yash Chopra’s “Chandni” (1989).
In 1991, Rishi starred opposite Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiyar in “Henna,” directed by his brother Randhir Kapoor. The film was India’s submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Throughout the 1990s, Rishi Kapoor continued to deliver memorable performances in films like “Damini” (1993), “Bol Radha Bol” (1992), and “Karobaar” (2000). In 1999, he made his directorial debut with “Aa Ab Laut Chalen,” starring Rajesh Khanna, Akshaye Khanna, and Aishwarya Rai. Transitioning to character roles in the mid-2000s, Rishi Kapoor appeared in supporting roles in films such as “Hum Tum” (2004), “Fanaa” (2006), and “Love Aaj Kal” (2009).
In the 2010s, he showcased his versatility with roles in films like “Agneepath” (2012), “Aurangzeb” (2013), and “Kaanchi” (2014). He won critical acclaim for his role in “Do Dooni Chaar” (2010) and “Kapoor & Sons” (2016). In 2018, Rishi reunited with Amitabh Bachchan in “102 Not Out” and received praise for his role in “Mulk.”
His final film released during his lifetime was “The Body” (2019). At the time of his death in April 2020, he was working on “Sharmaji Namkeen,” which was later completed by Paresh Rawal and released in March 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
