Career
At the age of six, Nargis made her debut in the movie “Talashe Haq” in 1935. As a child artist, she worked in the film “Madam Fashion,” directed by her mother Jaddanbai. When she was 14 years old, she acted in the movie “Taqdeer,” directed and produced by Mehboob Khan in 1943. She went on to perform in numerous super hit movies such as “Barsaat” (1949), “Andaz” (1949), “Awaara” (1951), “Deedar” (1951), “Shree 420” (1955), and “Chori Chori” (1956).
In 1957, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in “Mother India,” which was also nominated for an Oscar. According to Indian publisher and writer Baburao Patel, no other actress could have portrayed the role of a mother as beautifully as Nargis did in “Mother India.”
In 1958, Nargis became the first Indian actress to receive the Padma Shri Award. After marrying Sunil Dutt in the same year, she decided to give up her acting career, though she did perform in a few more films. In 1967, she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award and the National Film Award for her last movie “Raat Aur Din,” making her the first woman to win the National Film Award.
Nargis won several other awards for her outstanding performance in the Indian film industry. In 2001, she was honored with the “Best Artists of Millennium” award by Hero Honda and film magazine Stardust. In the same year, she was listed as the “Greatest Actress of All Time” by Rediff.com.
There is a rumor that Motilal Nehru, father of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was Nargis’s maternal grandfather, as her mother Jaddanbai was said to be the result of an affair between Nargis’s grandmother Dilipa Devi and Motilal Nehru.
When Nargis first met Sunil Dutt on the set of the movie “Do Bigha Zamin,” she was a successful actress earning ₹50,000 per film, whereas Sunil Dutt was an aspiring actor making only ten or twelve rupees per month. Nargis had various hobbies, including dancing, traveling, listening to music, and playing golf. She also loved cricket, and her favorite filmmaker was Mehboob Khan.
In 1935, she was given the name “Baby Nargis” in the film “Talashe Haq.” Since then, she was known by this name in all her movies. Nargis was the first Indian actress to receive an international film award for Best Actress at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechoslovakia in 1958.
When she was in a coma at the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center in New York, some doctors suggested to Sunil Dutt that he should switch off her life support system, but he refused. To his surprise, she started recovering from the coma. On 30 December 1993, the Indian Post issued a postal stamp in her honor. Google also remembered Nargis Dutt on her 86th birthday on 1 June 2015. In her memory, the Directorate of Film Festivals started the “Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration” in 1965.
