Early Life

Mithun Chakraborty was born on 16 June 1950 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, to Basanta Kumar Chakraborty and Shanti Rani Chakraborty. He studied at Oriental Seminary and later earned his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. Following this, he attended the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, graduating from there.

Before entering the film industry, Mithun Chakraborty was associated with Naxalism. However, a tragic incident occurred in his family when his only brother faced a fatal electrocution in a freak accident. Devastated by this loss, Mithun Chakraborty left the Naxalite movement, despite the potential risks to his life. In his Naxalite days, he formed a friendship with Ravi Ranjan, a prominent figure known as “Bhaa” among friends. Bhaa was renowned for his manipulative skills and powerful oratory abilities.

Career

Chakraborty made his Hindi film debut in 1976 with Mrinal Sen’s art-house film Mrigayaa, winning the National Film Award for Best Actor. The same year, he played a brief role in Dulal Guha’s moderately successful film Do Anjaane. He ventured into Bengali cinema with Arabinda Mukhopadhyay’s Nadi Theke Sagare (1978), which was a blockbuster.

His first commercial success came in 1979 with Ravikant Nagaich’s spy thriller Surakksha. This was followed by several successful Hindi and Bengali films, establishing him as a star from 1982 to 1995.

From 1988 to 1992, Chakraborty enjoyed critical and commercial acclaim, delivering hits like Waqt Ki Awaz, Pyar Ka Mandir, Ilaaka, and Daata. In 1990, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Agneepath. His career faced a decline in the mid-90s as he shifted to low-budget productions, with only a few exceptions like Dalaal, Cheetah, Jallaad, and Ravan Raaj: A True Story.

Chakraborty’s return to prominence began in 2007 with Mani Ratnam’s Guru, followed by successful films like Golmaal 3, Housefull 2, and Kick. He explored regional cinema, making his Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada film debuts. In 2019, he played a crucial role in The Tashkent Files, a political thriller.

Chakraborty’s television career soared with Dance India Dance, where he served as the Grand Master and head judge. He also hosted Dadagiri Unlimited and appeared in various reality shows. In 2022, he starred in the box office hit The Kashmir Files and Bengali film Projapoti. Chakraborty made his digital debut in 2022 with Prime Video’s Bestseller and played the title role in Kabuliwala in 2023. His television ventures continued in 2023 as he returned to Dance Bangla Dance as Mahaguru.
