Career
Kiran Rao began her career in the film industry as an assistant director on the epic film “Lagaan,” directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. This film, produced by and starring Aamir Khan, was nominated for the 74th Academy Awards in the foreign language film category. Before working on “Lagaan,” Kiran Rao had a minor supporting role in “Dil Chahta Hai.” She also served as the second assistant director with Mira Nair on the indie hit “Monsoon Wedding.”
Kiran Rao later scripted and directed the film “Dhobi Ghat,” which was released in January 2011 under Aamir Khan Productions. She has started writing her next film, which will have its roots in Kolkata.
In 2015, Kiran Rao was appointed the chairperson of the Mumbai Film Festival, also known as MAMI. She also showcased her singing talent by performing a Marathi song, “Toofan Aalaya,” which is the anthem for the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup.
