Aditi Rao Hydari was born in Hyderabad to Ehsaan Hydari and Vidya Rao. Her father, Ehsaan Hydari, was a Sulaimani Bohra Muslim, while her mother, Vidya Rao, is a practicing Buddhist with a mixed background of Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin and Telugu roots.
Both of Aditi’s parents belonged to the nobility of the former Hyderabad state. Ehsaan Hydari, Aditi’s father, was the grandson of Akbar Hydari, who served as the Prime Minister of Hyderabad state. Aditi’s mother, Vidya Rao, is a skilled classical singer in the genres of thumri and dadra in Hindustani music. Aditi’s maternal grandmother, Shanta Rameshwar Rao, founded Vidyaranya High School in Hyderabad and chaired the publishing house Orient Blackswan.

In 2004, Aditi made her acting debut in the Tamil film “Sringaram,” directed by Sharada Ramanathan. She played the lead role of a devadasi, a temple dancer from the 19th century. The film gained international recognition at various film festivals and won three National Film Awards. Aditi’s first theatrical release was the Malayalam film “Prajapathi” in 2006, where she starred alongside Mammootty.
