Career

Fantasia Barrino’s journey to stardom began with her remarkable performances on “American Idol” during the 2004–2005 season. Her rendition of “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” left her in tears and earned high praise from the judges, becoming one of AOL’s greatest television moments of 2004. In the final performance of the season, she performed “Summertime” again, prompting Simon Cowell to call her the best contestant in the history of the show. With over 65 million votes cast, Barrino won the competition on May 26, 2004, defeating runner-up Diana DeGarmo by 1.3 million votes. At 19, she was the youngest winner at the time until Jordin Sparks won at 17 in 2007.

After “American Idol,” Barrino participated in the U.S. tour with other finalists and appeared in the Christmas special “Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia: Home for the Holidays.” Her debut single, “I Believe,” released in June 2004, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to achieve this with a first single.
