Career

Fantasia Barrino’s journey to stardom began with her remarkable performances on “American Idol” during the 2004–2005 season. Her rendition of “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” left her in tears and earned high praise from the judges, becoming one of AOL’s greatest television moments of 2004. In the final performance of the season, she performed “Summertime” again, prompting Simon Cowell to call her the best contestant in the history of the show. With over 65 million votes cast, Barrino won the competition on May 26, 2004, defeating runner-up Diana DeGarmo by 1.3 million votes. At 19, she was the youngest winner at the time until Jordin Sparks won at 17 in 2007.

After “American Idol,” Barrino participated in the U.S. tour with other finalists and appeared in the Christmas special “Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia: Home for the Holidays.” Her debut single, “I Believe,” released in June 2004, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to achieve this with a first single. The single became the top-selling single of 2004 in the U.S. and won three Billboard Music Awards.

In November 2004, Barrino released her debut album, “Free Yourself,” which included hit singles like “Truth Is” and “Free Yourself.” The album’s controversial single “Baby Mama” reached the top twenty despite criticism for romanticizing single motherhood. “Truth Is” held the number one position on the Billboard Hot Adult R&B Airplay chart for 14 weeks. Barrino was named the number one artist of the Adult Urban Contemporary format for 2005.

Throughout 2005, Barrino made numerous TV appearances to promote her album. She portrayed Aretha Franklin in an episode of “American Dreams,” guest-voiced on “The Simpsons,” and had a cameo on “All of Us.” She performed at the thirty-sixth NAACP Image Awards and went on her first tour with her own live band, performing at various music festivals and opening for Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky Tour.”

In 2006, Barrino received three Grammy nominations for her debut album and performed in an all-star tribute to Sly and the Family Stone at the Grammy Awards. She starred in the Lifetime Television film based on her autobiography, “Life Is Not a Fairy Tale,” directed by Debbie Allen. The film debuted in August 2006 and became one of the network’s most viewed programs.

Barrino released her second album, “Fantasia,” in December 2006, featuring the hit single “When I See U,” which topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for eight weeks. She also collaborated with artists like Faith Evans, Patti LaBelle, and Aretha Franklin on various projects.

In 2007, Barrino joined the Broadway cast of “The Color Purple,” playing the lead role of Celie. Her performances led to a significant increase in ticket sales for the show, and she received several awards for her role. Barrino continued to perform in the musical until January 2008, despite undergoing surgery to remove a tumor on her vocal cords.

In 2008, Barrino began work on her third studio album, collaborating with producers like Missy Elliott and The Underdogs. She parted ways with 19 Entertainment but continued to release music through 19 Recordings and J Records. Barrino also appeared on Jennifer Hudson’s album and reprised her role in “The Color Purple” for the national tour.

Barrino’s reality show, “Fantasia for Real,” premiered on VH1 in January 2010, receiving positive reviews and high ratings. Her third studio album, “Back to Me,” was released in August 2010, featuring the single “Bittersweet,” which reached the top ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. To promote the album, Barrino embarked on her first solo concert tour.

In 2011, Barrino won her first Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Bittersweet.” She was cast to play gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in a biographical film and was included in Aretha Franklin’s list of potential actresses for her biopic. In October, RCA Music Group announced the closure of J Records, with Barrino continuing her future releases under RCA Records.

In December 2012, Barrino premiered her new single “Lose to Win” and announced her album release date. Her fourth studio album, “Side Effects of You,” was released in April 2013. Barrino also performed in the Broadway musical revue “After Midnight,” receiving rave reviews for her performances.

In October 2014, Barrino was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. She collaborated with Dave Koz on his Christmas album and with Michelle Williams on the remix of “If We Had Your Eyes.” In 2016, she released the single “No Time for It” from her next album, which featured collaborations with producers like Ron Fair.

Barrino toured with Anthony Hamilton in 2016 and released her album “The Definition Of…” in July, featuring two top ten singles on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart. The album’s success solidified Barrino’s place in the music industry, showcasing her enduring talent and resilience.
