Career
On January 27, 1992, Wynonna Judd made her first solo television performance at the American Music Awards, where she introduced “She Is His Only Need,” the debut single from her self-titled solo album, released later that year. Produced by Tony Brown and released by MCA/Curb, the album’s first three singles, “She Is His Only Need,” “I Saw the Light,” and “My Strongest Weakness,” all reached number one on the Billboard country singles charts. “No One Else on Earth” was the top country song of 1992 according to Billboard Year-End and also found minor success on the Adult Contemporary chart, peaking at No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100. “My Strongest Weakness” reached No. 4 on the country charts.
In 1993, Wynonna released her second album, “Tell Me Why,” which also achieved platinum status. It produced five consecutive Top Ten hits on the country charts: “Tell Me Why,” “Only Love,” “Is It Over Yet,” “Rock Bottom,” and “Girls with Guitars,” written by Mary Chapin Carpenter. The title track became her third crossover hit, peaking at No. 77 on the pop charts and No. 24 on the Adult Contemporary charts. During this period, Wynonna also sang guest vocals on Clint Black’s 1993 single “A Bad Goodbye,” which led to their joint tour, the Black & Wy tour.
In 1994, Wynonna appeared on the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute album “Skynyrd Frynds,” covering “Free Bird.” She also sang duet vocals on Michael English’s debut single, “Healing.” Following a period of negative publicity after having a child out of wedlock, Wynonna was absent from the country charts in 1995. She married Arch Kelly in 1996, the father of her daughter and son.
Her third album, “Revelations,” was released in 1996 and was certified platinum. The lead single, “To Be Loved by You,” became her fourth and final number one hit. The other singles from the album did not achieve the same success. Wynonna’s fourth album, “The Other Side,” released in 1997, marked a shift to a more blues and rock sound. Despite producing four singles, the album did not sell as well as her previous efforts.
In 1999, Wynonna reunited with her mother, Naomi, for a New Year’s Eve tour. A month later, she released her fifth solo album, “New Day Dawning,” which included a bonus disc with new Judds songs. Her sixth studio album, “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” came out in 2003, featuring the title track which reached the Top 15 on the country charts.
Wynonna released a live CD/DVD package, “Her Story: Scenes from a Lifetime,” in 2005, along with her autobiography, “Coming Home to Myself.” The album included a new track, “Attitude,” which reached No. 40 on the country charts. That year, she also released her first solo Christmas album, “A Classic Christmas.” In 2009, she released “Sing: Chapter 1,” an album largely composed of cover songs.
In 2010, The Judds appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” where Wynonna discussed her recent life events and the duo’s return to the stage. They released the single “I Will Stand By You” and performed it on the show. This single was part of their 2011 greatest hits collection, “I Will Stand by You: The Essential Collection.”
In 2011, Wynonna released her first novel, “Restless Heart.” She also debuted her new band, “Wynonna & the Big Noise,” in 2011. In 2013, Wynonna released “Something You Can’t Live Without,” the first single from her new album produced by her husband, Cactus Moser. The album, “Wynonna & the Big Noise,” came out in 2016, featuring singles like “Jesus and a Jukebox” and “Things I Lean On.”
Wynonna released an extended play titled “Recollections” in 2020. On April 30, 2022, her mother Naomi Judd passed away, just before The Judds were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wynonna and her sister Ashley paid tribute to their mother during the induction ceremony. Wynonna honored the planned tour dates she and Naomi had set for the summer of 2022, supported by several female country artists.
This tour was chronicled in the documentary “Wynonna Judd: Between Hell and Hallelujah,” released in 2023. On November 2, 2022, a concert special called “CMT Presents The Judds: Love Is Alive – The Final Concert” was produced, featuring performances by Wynonna and various guest stars, recreating The Judds’ original farewell concert.
