Career
Kumar’s journey in the film industry began in 1944 with his debut film “Jwar Bhata,” which didn’t gain much attention. Despite facing initial setbacks with his first few films, Kumar’s breakthrough came with “Jugnu” in 1947, alongside Noor Jehan. The movie became a major hit, followed by successes like “Shaheed” and “Mela” in 1948.
In 1949, he starred in “Andaz,” which proved to be his breakthrough role, alongside Raj Kapoor and Nargis. This movie became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time of its release. The 1950s marked Kumar’s peak period with numerous successful films like “Jogan,” “Babul,” “Deedar,” “Tarana,” “Daag,” “Aan,” “Uran Khatola,” “Insaniyat,” “Devdas,” “Naya Daur,” “Yahudi,” “Madhumati,” and “Paigham.” He formed iconic on-screen pairings with actresses like Vyjayanthimala, Madhubala, Nargis, Meena Kumari, and Kamini Kaushal.
Kumar’s acting prowess in tragic roles earned him the title of the “Tragedy King.” However, to counter the toll of such intense roles on his mental health, he diversified into lighter roles, notably in films like “Aan” and “Azaad.”
During the 1950s, he established his signature acting style, characterized by understated performances with subtle expressions. Kumar won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for “Daag” and went on to win it several times throughout his career. Many of his films during this decade ranked among the highest-grossing of the period.
In the 1960s, Kumar starred in monumental films like “Mughal-e-Azam,” where he portrayed Prince Salim. This film remained the highest-grossing Indian film for 15 years. He also ventured into production with “Ganga Jamuna” in 1961, which received critical acclaim and various awards.
Despite occasional successes like “Kranti” in 1981, Kumar faced a career slump in the 1970s due to emerging stars like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. He took a hiatus from films from 1976 to 1981. However, his return marked a new phase in his career with character roles, particularly as the “Angry Old Man.”
In the 1990s, Kumar appeared in notable films like “Saudagar” in 1991, his last box office success. He received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
Towards the end of his career, Kumar’s health declined, leading to shelved projects and limited film appearances. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2006, representing Maharashtra.
