Sridevi, born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyappan on February 13, 1963, in Meenampatti village near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, India, was the daughter of Ayyapan and Rajeswari. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother hailed from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Sridevi grew up speaking Telugu as her mother tongue and was also fluent in Tamil. She had a sister and two step-brothers.

She began her acting career as a child artist at the age of four in the Tamil film “Kandhan Karunai” in 1967, followed by other notable roles in various languages including Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Some of her early notable films as a child artist include “Poompatta” (1971) in Malayalam, “Bhakta Kumbara” (1974) in Kannada, and “Rani Mera Naam” (1972) in Bollywood.

Sridevi transitioned to lead roles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, establishing herself as a prominent actress in South Indian cinema with successful films like “Moondru Mudichu” (1976) in Tamil and “16 Vayathinile” (1977) in Tamil and its Telugu remake “Padaharella Vayasu” (1978).

Her entry into Hindi cinema happened with “Solva Sawan” in 1979, but it was the 1983 film “Himmatwala” opposite Jeetendra that marked her breakthrough in Bollywood. The success of “Himmatwala” paved the way for a string of successful Hindi films like “Tohfa” (1984), “Sadma” (1983), “Nagina” (1986), and “Mr. India” (1987), which solidified her position as one of the leading actresses of her time.

Throughout the 1980s, Sridevi delivered numerous hits across various genres and languages, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Her performances in films like “Chandni” (1989) and “ChaalBaaz” (1989) garnered widespread appreciation and accolades.

In the 1990s, Sridevi continued her successful streak with memorable roles in films like “Khuda Gawah” (1992), “Gumrah” (1993), “Laadla” (1994), and “Judaai” (1997). However, after her mother’s demise in 1997, she took a hiatus from acting to focus on her family.

After a gap of almost 15 years, Sridevi made a triumphant comeback with the critically acclaimed film “English Vinglish” (2012), where she played the role of a middle-aged woman learning English. The film’s success reaffirmed her position as one of the finest actresses in Indian cinema. Following “English Vinglish,” Sridevi appeared in films like “Puli” (2015) and “Mom” (2017), receiving praise for her performances. Her last on-screen appearance was in a cameo role in the film “Zero” (2018).

Throughout her illustrious career, Sridevi received numerous awards and nominations, including the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in “Mom” (2017).
