Career

His talent was recognized when he bowled an impressive spell that dismissed Yuvraj Singh at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru while on Air India’s sports scholarship in 2009. This performance caught the attention of the cricket community and led to his participation in the prestigious BCCI Corporate Trophy, where he played alongside Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa, and Suresh Raina. He finished the tournament as the joint highest wicket-taker.

He further demonstrated his bowling skills at the 2008/09 Cooch Behar Trophy by taking 30 wickets in just six matches. He also led India’s bowling attack in an Under-19 tri-nation series in South Africa, taking eight wickets, which served as preparation for the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

In the 2010 U19 World Cup, he represented India and played alongside future national team players KL Rahul, Jaydev Unadkat, and Mayank Agarwal. He sacrificed his academic commitments to participate in the tournament, missing his first semester exams for his Computer Engineering degree. His dedication paid off as he became the leading wicket-taker for India in the tournament, capturing nine wickets in six matches with a bowling average of 17.22. However, India was knocked out in the quarter-final by Pakistan in a thrilling, rain-affected match.

Despite his impressive performances, he struggled to break into the Indian national team and the Mumbai team due to the presence of established pacers like Zaheer Khan, Aavishkar Salvi, Ajit Agarkar, and Dhawal Kulkarni. He made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2013 but was not a regular in Mumbai’s playing XI. He eventually quit his job as a software testing engineer to focus on his cricketing career.

In 2016, he played for the North West Region at the USACA National Championship. He caught the attention of the US national team’s head coach, Pubudu Dassanayake, with a strong performance in a warm-up match in 2017. In January 2018, he was selected for the United States national cricket team for the Regional Super50 tournament in the West Indies, where he made his List A debut against Leeward Islands, taking 2 for 45 in 10 overs.

In August 2018, he was named in the United States’ squad for the ICC World Twenty20 Americas Qualifier tournament. In October 2018, he was appointed captain of the United States team for the Regional Super50 tournament and the ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Oman. In February 2019, he became the captain of the US Twenty20 International (T20I) team, leading them in their first T20I series against the UAE. He made his T20I debut on March 15, 2019. Under his captaincy, the US gained One Day International (ODI) status in April 2019 after finishing in the top four in the Division 2 U19 World Cup in Namibia. He made his ODI debut for the United States on April 27, 2019, against Papua New Guinea.

In June 2019, he was named in a 30-man training squad for the United States cricket team ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier tournament in Bermuda. He was one of twelve players to sign a central contract with USA Cricket in July 2019. He captained the United States team in the Regional Super50 tournament and the UAE Tri-Nation Series in 2019, where he took five wickets for 32 runs in the opening match against the UAE, becoming the first bowler for the United States to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI match.

In September 2020, he was signed by the Golden State Grizzlies for the 2021 Minor League Cricket season. In October 2021, he played in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier tournament in Antigua. In May 2022, he participated in rounds 12 and 13 of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tournament, becoming the USA’s leading wicket-taker in limited-overs cricket. In June 2022, he played in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B tournament in Zimbabwe, taking the first five-wicket haul for the United States in a T20I match against Singapore.

On June 6, 2024, he gained international fame by playing a crucial role in a famous victory against Pakistan during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He defended 18 runs in the super over, leading the USA to a remarkable win and propelling them to the top of their group. His performance was celebrated as a form of sweet revenge for the defeat against Pakistan in the 2010 U19 World Cup.

In March 2023, he was picked by the Washington Freedom to play in Major League Cricket, finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker in the inaugural season, including a standout spell of 6/9 against the San Francisco Unicorns.
