Early Life
Remo D’Souza was born on April 2, 1974, in Olavakkode, Palakkad, Kerala, into a Hindu family. His birth name is Ramesh Gopi Nair, and his parents are Gopi Nair, a chef in the Indian Air Force, and Madhaviyamma, a housewife. He has an elder brother named Ganesh and four sisters. During his school days, he excelled as an athlete, winning prizes in the 100-meter race.
His schooling took place at the Air Force School in Jamnagar, Gujarat. However, during his HSC board exam, he realized he had no interest in studies. He left school and moved to Mumbai against his father’s wish for him to join the Indian Air Force. Remo learned to dance on his own by watching movies, music videos, and, particularly, by emulating Michael Jackson’s moves.
Remo D’Souza is married to Lizelle Watkins (now D’Souza), an Anglo-Indian from Mumbai. After converting to Christianity, he changed his name to Remo D’Souza. Lizelle, a costume designer, collaborates with Remo on various projects. The couple has two sons, Dhruv and Gabriel, and they currently reside in Andheri West, Mumbai. On December 11, 2020, Remo D’Souza experienced a heart attack and was admitted to the ICU of Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. Fortunately, he recovered and was discharged soon after.
Career
Remo D’Souza is a well-known choreographer in Bollywood, working on films and music videos. He started his television journey with the dance reality show Dance India Dance (DID), where he trained contestants in various dance forms. Later, Remo made his directorial debut with the comedy film F.A.L.T.U, which received positive reviews.
His next directorial venture was the 3D dance-based film ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, starring Prabhu Deva, Dharmesh Yelande, Lauren Gottlieb, Salman Yusuff Khan, and Punit Pathak. The film and its soundtrack received positive responses from critics. Remo directed the sequel, Disney’s ABCD 2, in 2015, exploring the journey of a dance crew winning the World Hip Hop Dance Championship.
Remo participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and later became the “super judge” on the dance show Dance Plus. He directed A Flying Jatt in 2016, featuring Tiger Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Nathan Jones, receiving mixed reviews. Remo continued judging Dance Plus and Dance Champions. In 2018, he directed Race 3 featuring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah, Saqib Saleem and Freddy Daruwala.
In 2020, Remo directed Street Dancer 3D, the third installment of the ABCD franchise, with Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhu Deva, and others. The film, showcasing a dance battle between rival groups, received positive reviews and had a successful box office run.
