In 1997, Preity Zinta’s journey into acting began unexpectedly when she accompanied a friend to an audition in Mumbai. She caught the eye of director Shekhar Kapur, who insisted she audition herself. Although she had never planned on becoming an actress, Kapur saw potential in her and recommended her for a role in Mani Ratnam’s film “Dil Se..” Despite her initial reluctance, Zinta accepted the offer, motivated by the challenge of playing diverse roles.
Her first film, “Dil Se..,” released in 1998, featured her in a supporting role opposite Shahrukh Khan. Despite limited screen time, Zinta’s performance garnered attention, especially for her forthright character. The film didn’t do well in India but found success internationally. Zinta’s next release, “Soldier,” was a commercial hit, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
She continued to explore different genres, starring in Telugu films before appearing in “Sangharsh,” where she portrayed a CBI officer. Although the film didn’t fare well at the box office, Zinta’s performance received praise from critics.
In 2000, Zinta’s career gained momentum with the success of “Kya Kehna,” where she played a teenage single mother.
