Momina Mustehsan, born on 5 September 1992 in Quetta, Balochistan, grew up in a Shia Muslim family with Urdu-speaking parents. Her mother, Huma Mustehsan, is a doctor, while her father, Kazim Mustehsan, is a retired brigadier from the Pakistan Army, honored with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz award.
Mustehsan has two siblings: an elder brother, Hashim Mustehsan, who is a doctor, and a younger brother, Haider Mustehsan, who works at the Pakistan section of the United Nations. Due to her father’s army career, the family lived in various places, including Multan, New York, Paris, and Kyiv, but predominantly in Islamabad, which she considers her hometown.
Career
Mustehsan began her journey in music during her school days, singing in a choir without any formal training. Her interest in music blossomed when she received praise for her singing during a school performance. In 2004, she recorded her first cover of Damien Rice’s “The Blower’s Daughter,” despite lacking musical training, earning admiration for her talent.
In 2012, Mustehsan collaborated with Farhan Saeed for the song “Pee Jaun,” which she also wrote the lyrics for. She gained further recognition with her song “Sajna” for Junoon’s twentieth-anniversary album. Her participation in Coke Studio’s ninth season in 2016 marked her debut as a featured artist, with her rendition of “Afreen Afreen” alongside Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, which became a massive success, garnering millions of views on YouTube.
Following her Coke Studio success, Mustehsan continued to release music, including singles like “Aaya Na Tu” with Arjun Kanungo and the controversial “Ko Ko Korina” remake with Ahad Raza Mir. Despite facing criticism for the latter, she collaborated with Sahir Ali Bagga for Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2’s song “Ishq Hoa Jo Tari,” which proved to be commercially successful.
