Manoj Bajpayee began his acting career with minor roles in films like “Drohkaal” (1994) and “Bandit Queen” (1994). He gained attention for his role in the latter, which led to more opportunities. Bajpayee’s breakthrough came with “Satya” (1998), directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He portrayed the character of gangster Bhiku Mhatre, earning critical acclaim and several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Following “Satya,” Bajpayee continued to collaborate with Varma in films like “Kaun?” (1999) and “Shool” (1999). Despite “Kaun?” not performing well at the box office, Bajpayee’s performance was praised. “Shool,” where he played an honest police officer, was both a critical and commercial success, earning him more accolades.
In the early 2000s, Bajpayee appeared in various films like “Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!” (2000), “Ghaath” (2000), and “Aks” (2001). His portrayal of a negative character in “Aks” earned him a Filmfare Award nomination. He continued to showcase his versatility with roles in films like “Zubeidaa” (2001) and “Road” (2002).
