Early Life

Janhvi Kapoor was born on 6th March 1997. Her father is the film producer Boney Kapoor, the son of the late filmmaker Surinder Kapoor, and her mother is the actress Sridevi. She is the niece of film actors Anil and Sanjay Kapoor. Her younger sister, Khushi, is also an actress. She has two half-siblings, Arjun (an actor), and Anshula Kapoor from her father’s first marriage.

Kapoor lost her mother when she was just 20. Her mom was found dead due to an accidental drowning in Dubai. Kapoor studied at Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai. Before stepping into films, she learned acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in California.

Career

Janhvi Kapoor started her acting journey in 2018 with the movie “Dhadak,” directed by Shashank Khaitan. In this romantic film, she starred alongside Ishaan Khatter. “Dhadak” was a Hindi remake of the Marathi film “Sairat” from 2016. The story revolves around a young upper-class girl who faces tragic consequences after eloping with a lower-class boy, played by Khatter.

Rajeev Masand, writing for News18, criticized the film for removing caste-based references but praised Kapoor for her “fragility” and “soulful quality” on screen. On the other hand, Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost found Kapoor’s performance lacking in personality and color. Despite the mixed reviews, Kapoor won the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.

In 2020, Kapoor appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s segment of the Netflix horror anthology film “Ghost Stories.” Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express disliked the segments but commended Kapoor for a “solid, real act.” Following this, she portrayed the title role in the biopic “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl,” opposite Pankaj Tripathi, Riva Arora, Manav Vij, Vineet Kumar Singh, Yogendra Vikram Singh, Ayesha Raza and Angad Bedi which couldn’t have a theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instead streamed on Netflix.

In 2022, she appeared in “Good Luck Jerry,” a remake of the 2018 Tamil film “Kolamaavu Kokila,” released on Disney+ Hotstar.
