Career
When Jade Goody appeared on Big Brother 3, she was ridiculed by the British tabloid press for her lack of general knowledge. She mistakenly thought the English city of Cambridge was in London and, when corrected that it was in East Anglia, she assumed East Anglia was outside Britain, referring to it as “East Angula.” Goody was also criticized for backstabbing and for an evening when she cavorted drunk and naked.
From 2003 to 2006, Goody’s fame grew as she appeared in her own reality TV shows and regularly featured in celebrity and gossip-oriented women’s magazines such as Heat and OK!. She participated in the 2006 London Marathon but collapsed after 34 km and recovered overnight at the Royal London Hospital. She admitted to not fully understanding the marathon distance and mentioned her unpreparedness due to her diet of curry and Chinese food. Goody managed to raise £565.20 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
On 16 February 2004, Goody entered the Back to Reality house on Channel 5, a show similar to Big Brother featuring contestants from other reality shows. She was evicted on day 20. In 2005, Goody launched her own fragrance, Shh…, which became Superdrug’s third-bestselling fragrance. In May 2006, her autobiography, Jade: My Autobiography, was published. That same year, she won a celebrity edition of the ITV singing game show Stars in Their Eyes as Lynn Anderson, performing “Rose Garden.”
In 2007, Goody, her boyfriend Jack Tweed, and her mother entered the Celebrity Big Brother 5 house. She had recently placed 25th in a Heat poll of the world’s most influential people, with lifetime earnings of £8 million. However, her time on the show was marred by controversy. Numerous complaints were made about her behavior towards housemate Shilpa Shetty, with Goody making derogatory remarks that led to accusations of racism. The incident received widespread media coverage, including condemnation from British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown. Goody was evicted from the Big Brother house on 19 January 2007, with 82 percent of the vote against Shetty. She publicly apologized for her behavior, expressing disgust with herself and acknowledging the damage done to her career.
Despite initially denying her comments were racist, Goody later apologized during a trip to India, admitting that her remarks could be seen as racist and expressing sincere regret for the pain caused to Shetty and her family.
In April 2008, Goody announced plans to introduce a second fragrance line, Controversial. Later that year, she appeared on Bigg Boss 2, the Indian version of Big Brother. Two days into the show, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and immediately withdrew, returning to England. Scenes of her learning of the diagnosis were not broadcast in India.
In September 2008, a reality-television documentary, Living With Jade Goody, aired as part of the Living With… series on Living TV. In October, she opened her second beauty salon, “Homme Fatel” for men, and her second autobiography, Jade: Catch A Falling Star, was published. A documentary film, Jade’s Cancer Battle, aired in December with further shows planned if she could participate.
At the end of 2008, Goody played the Wicked Queen in a Christmas pantomime version of Snow White at the Theatre Royal in Lincoln, receiving critical praise. However, she withdrew from the production in January 2009 due to health reasons.
