Career
Nirupam began his journalism career in 1986 and became the chief editor of Saamana in 1993, a newspaper owned by Bal Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena. He transitioned into politics and became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Shiv Sena in 1996. During his tenure, he served on several Parliamentary Committees, including the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Finance Committee.
Nirupam later joined the Congress Party, where he opened the 2013–14 budget debate in Parliament and served as Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), also taking on the role of Secretary-in-Charge for the state of Bihar. He became a national spokesperson for the Congress Party, representing their views on various issues on TV channels. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was defeated by BJP candidate Gopal Shetty. In 2015, Nirupam was appointed President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee.
In 2008, Nirupam participated as a contestant on the reality TV show Bigg Boss. After another poor showing for the Congress Party in the BMC elections in 2017, Nirupam resigned as the head of the party in Mumbai. On April 4, 2024, he was suspended from the Indian National Congress for six years due to party indiscipline. Later that same day, he resigned from the party.
