Early Life

Khatter comes from a family rooted in the entertainment world, being the son of actors Neelima Azeem and Rajesh Khattar. His half-brother, Shahid Kapoor, is Azeem’s son from her previous marriage to actor Pankaj Kapur.

Khatter takes pride in his middle-class values. He shares that his upbringing was surrounded by a rich blend of culture, cinema, and the performing arts. Growing up, he immersed himself in developing his skills as an artist. Khatter received his education at Jamnabai Narsee School and Billabong High International School in Mumbai. Additionally, he explored his passion for dance at Shiamak Davar’s academy.

His journey in the world of entertainment began with a childhood appearance in the 2005 film “Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!” alongside his brother Shahid Kapoor. Later, Khatter ventured into the behind-the-scenes realm, working as an assistant director for Abhishek Chaubey’s “Udta Punjab” (2016) and Danish Renzu’s independent film “Half Widow” (2017).

Career

Khatter stepped into the world of adult acting with “Beyond the Clouds” (2017), directed by Majid Majidi. In the film, he portrayed Amir, a character involved in drug dealing. The movie premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and later hit theaters in 2018. Deborah Young, in her review for The Hollywood Reporter, praised Khatter’s screen presence, predicting a promising future for him. His performance earned him the Best Actor award at the 5th International Bosphorous Film Festival and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

Following this success, Khatter took on the lead role in Shashank Khaitan’s romantic drama “Dhadak” (2018), a remake of the Marathi film “Sairat” (2016). Co-starring with Janhvi Kapoor, the film narrates the challenges faced by two young lovers in rural Rajasthan due to caste discrimination.

In 2020, Khatter appeared in the British miniseries “A Suitable Boy,” adapted by Mira Nair from Vikram Seth’s novel. Paired with Tabu, the series aired on BBC One and explored an older woman-young man romance, challenging societal norms. The same year, he starred alongside Ananya Panday, Satish Kaushik, Jaideep Ahlawat, Suyash Tilak & Anup Soni in the action film “Khaali Peeli,” released digitally on Zee Plex due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, Khatter featured in the comedy horror film “Phone Bhoot” alongside Katrina Kaif and Siddhant Chaturvedi. While reviewers had mixed opinions about the movie, Khatter’s charm and spunk in his comic role were highlighted.

In 2023, he played army commander Balram Singh Mehta alongside Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli & Soni Razdan in the war drama “Pippa,” set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film, initially planned for a theatrical release, eventually premiered on Amazon Prime Video. In a promotional short film for Apple Inc. titled “Fursat,” Khatter showcased his acting skills, shot on an iPhone 14 Pro.
