Career
In 2011, Dulquer Salmaan began his acting career with the crime film “Second Show,” directed by Srinath Rajendran. He portrayed the character of Harilal, a gangster, in this successful debut.
The following year, in 2012, Salmaan starred in “Ustad Hotel,” directed by Anwar Rasheed. His role as Faizy, a budding chef, earned him widespread praise. The film not only won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment but also marked a commercial success.
Also in 2012, Salmaan appeared in “Theevram,” a crime thriller directed by Roopesh Peethambaran. However, the film failed to perform well at the box office. In 2013, Salmaan starred in “ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi,” a comedy-drama directed by Martin Prakkat. His performance received positive reviews despite mixed critical reception for the film.
The same year, he made his singing debut with the song “Johnny Mone Johnny” in the film “ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi,” further adding to his versatility. Salmaan continued to showcase his acting prowess in various films like “Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi” and “Pattam Pole,” released in 2013. However, “Pattam Pole” failed to make an impact commercially.
In 2014, Salmaan appeared in “Bangalore Days,” directed by Anjali Menon. The film emerged as one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films and received positive reviews. The same year, he took on a romantic role in “Vaayai Moodi Pesavum,” a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual film. While the Tamil version received acclaim, the Malayalam version received poor reviews.
Salmaan’s career continued to soar with notable performances in films like “Charlie” (2015), “Kali” (2016), and “Kammatipaadam” (2016), which earned him critical acclaim and awards. In 2017, Salmaan starred in various films such as “Jomonte Suvisheshangal,” “Comrade in America,” and “Solo.” While some films performed well commercially, others faced backlash from the audience.
Salmaan made his Telugu debut with the biopic “Mahanati” in 2018, portraying the character of Gemini Ganesan. The film received positive reviews, marking a successful entry into the Telugu film industry. In 2019, he ventured into Bollywood with “Karwaan” alongside Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar. Although the film received mixed reviews, Salmaan’s performance was appreciated.
Salmaan continued to diversify his projects with films like “Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal” (2020) and “Varane Avashyamund” (2020), where he also served as a producer. In 2021, Salmaan starred in the crime-thriller “Kurup,” which became a commercial success. He further expanded his presence with the release of “Salute” (2022) and “Sita Ramam” (2022).
