Career

Dibakar Banerjee began his career in advertising as a copywriter, working at various agencies including Shems Combit, TBWA Anthem, and Contract Advertising in Delhi. During his time at Contract Advertising, he collaborated with Pradeep Sarkar and Jaideep Sahni, who later wrote the story, screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics for Khosla Ka Ghosla.

In 1997, Banerjee left Contract Advertising to launch his own company called ‘Watermark’ with two friends from the National Institute of Design (NID). They worked on promotional materials for Channel V and MTV, as well as advertisement films for major brands.

In 2006, Banerjee made his directorial debut with Khosla Ka Ghosla, a film set in Delhi and starring Anupam Kher and Boman Irani. The movie was both a critical and commercial success, earning Banerjee acclaim as a filmmaker.

Following the success of Khosla Ka Ghosla, Banerjee directed Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), another film set in Delhi. Starring Abhay Deol, Neetu Chandra, and Paresh Rawal, the movie premiered at the International Film Festival of India in Goa and received positive reviews.

In 2010, Banerjee directed Love Sex Aur Dhokha, India’s first film shot entirely on a digital camera and presented in a found footage style. The film dealt with issues like honor killings, MMS scandals, and sting operations, and was praised by critics for its realism.

Shanghai (2012) marked Banerjee’s next directorial venture, a political drama starring Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, and Emraan Hashmi. Based on the Greek novel Z, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In 2013, Banerjee adapted Satyajit Ray’s short story “Patol Babu, Film Star” for Bombay Talkies, an anthology film celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema. The segment received critical acclaim for its storytelling and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015) was Banerjee’s next project, based on the fictional detective created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The film, set in 1940s Kolkata, received mixed to positive reviews from critics.

In 2015, Banerjee co-produced Kanu Behl’s directorial debut, Titli, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film received positive reviews upon its release in India. Banerjee returned his National Award for Khosla Ka Ghosla in 2015, along with other filmmakers, in protest against the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s actions.

In 2018, Banerjee collaborated with Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, and Karan Johar for the anthology film Lust Stories, contributing a segment told from a female perspective. His subsequent projects include Ghost Stories (2020) and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021). In 2024, Banerjee announced Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2, which he directed, produced, and wrote.
