In the early 1950s, Asha Bhosle started her singing career in Hindi films, initially getting opportunities in low-budget movies and singing for supporting roles. While prominent playback singers like Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, and Lata Mangeshkar dominated the industry, Asha Bhosle took on assignments they refused, often singing for the “bad girls” or vamps in the films.

She began gaining recognition with songs like “Maang Ke Saath Tumhara” and “Saathi Haath Badhana” in films like “Naya Daur” (1957) and “Parineeta” (1953). O.P. Nayyar gave her a significant break in “C.I.D.” (1956), and she found success with songs like “Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri” from “Naya Daur.” Her collaboration with music directors like R.D. Burman and B.R. Chopra further solidified her position in the industry.

In the 1960s, Asha Bhosle’s performances in songs like “Aaja Aaja” from “Teesri Manzil” (1966) garnered widespread acclaim, showcasing her versatility. Her partnership with R.D. Burman resulted in several hits, including songs for actress Helen, with whom she shared a close professional relationship.

During the 1980s, Bhosle experimented with different genres, such as singing ghazals for the film “Umrao Jaan” (1981), which earned her critical acclaim and her first National Film Award.
