Career

In 1975, he moved to Mumbai to join his brother’s business. However, he soon realized that it wasn’t fulfilling, so he decided to explore acting, a passion he had nurtured since his college days. His first break in Indian cinema came in 1977 with the film “Paheli,” where he was introduced to Tarachand Barjatya by his sister-in-law Tabassum. This marked his Bollywood debut.

He gained prominence with roles in films like “Sawan Ko Aane Do” (1979) and “Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin” (1979). These successes propelled him to stardom. Additionally, he made his small screen debut in Ramanand Sagar’s “Vikram Aur Betaal” (1985).

However, it was his portrayal of Lord Rama in Sagar’s epic TV series “Ramayan” (1986) that truly established him as a household name. This role earned him accolades, including the Uptron Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1988. He continued to collaborate with Sagar, reprising his role as Rama in “Luv Kush” and “Jai Veer Hanuman.”

His portrayal of Rama opened doors for him, leading to roles such as Harishchandra in the TV series “Vishwamitra” and Buddha in another TV series. He even lent his voice to the character of Rama in the animation film “Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama” (1992) and played Laxman in “Lav Kush” (1997).

In 2020, he appeared on “The Kapil Sharma Show” along with other cast members of “Ramayan” to promote a book on the late Ramanand Sagar.
