Career

Johar began his career in the film industry as an assistant director and actor in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), a film considered a milestone in Hindi cinema.

His directorial debut came with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), a romantic comedy-drama that became a blockbuster hit and received positive reviews from critics. It won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and multiple Filmfare Awards.

In 2001, Johar achieved further success with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, an ensemble family drama featuring top Bollywood stars. The film was praised for its storytelling and became another major blockbuster.

His next directorial venture, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), explored the theme of marital infidelity among non-resident Indians living in New York City. Despite controversial subject matter, the film was a commercial success and received critical acclaim.

In 2010, Johar directed My Name Is Khan, a social drama starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The film addressed racial prejudice in post-9/11 America and received widespread praise from critics.

Johar continued his success with films like Student of the Year (2012), an ensemble romantic comedy featuring debutante actors, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), a musical romantic drama praised for its mature storytelling.

He collaborated with other directors for anthology films like Bombay Talkies (2013) and Lust Stories (2018), exploring diverse themes and narratives. In 2018, Johar announced his period drama Takht, featuring a star-studded ensemble cast. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was postponed.

In 2020, he contributed to the horror anthology Ghost Stories and announced his romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, released in 2023 to critical and commercial success.
