Early Life

Aishwarya Rai was born on 1 November 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, into a Tulu-speaking Hindu family. Her father, Krishnaraj, an army biologist, passed away on 18 March 2017, while her mother, Vrinda, is a housewife. Aishwarya has an elder brother, Aditya Rai, who works as an engineer in the merchant navy. Her film “Dil Ka Rishta” (2003) was co-produced by her brother and co-written by her mother.

Fluent in Tulu, Hindi, and English since childhood, Aishwarya moved to Mumbai when her father got a job transfer. She attended Arya Vidya Mandir High School in Mumbai. Recalling her academic journey, Aishwarya mentioned that she consistently achieved high ranks, except for one instance in the seventh grade when she stood second. Despite her early success, she faced a setback in the 10th grade, where she didn’t top the board exams, impacting her confidence.

For her intermediate schooling, Aishwarya spent a year at Jai Hind College before joining D. G. Ruparel College in Matunga. She secured 90 percent in the Higher Secondary (School) Certificate (HSC) exams. During her teens, Aishwarya received five years of training in classical dance and music. She had a keen interest in traditional dance forms, especially Bharatanatyam. Zoology was her favorite subject, and she initially considered pursuing a career in medicine. Although she briefly enrolled at Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture with plans to become an architect, she eventually chose to leave her education behind to pursue a modeling career.

Before gaining fame, a college photograph of Aishwarya caught the attention of photographers Gautam Rajadhyaksha and Farrokh Chothia, who approached her for advertisements. This marked the beginning of her journey into the world of modeling.

Aishwarya made her acting debut in 1997 with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film “Iruvar,” a political drama. Her Bollywood debut was in “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya” (1997).
