Career

In 2010, 17-year-old Malik auditioned in Manchester for the seventh series of the reality television competition, The X Factor. Initially nervous and hesitant to attend, his mother convinced him to go. He performed “Let Me Love You” by Mario as his audition song and progressed to the next round. Malik was seeking a new experience by auditioning.

Despite being eliminated before the final round, judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell grouped him with fellow contestants Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, forming a new boy band known as One Direction. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK, finished third in the competition, and subsequently signed a record deal with Cowell’s Syco Records and Columbia Records in North America.

One Direction released a licensed book, “One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story),” in February 2011, which topped The Sunday Times’ Best Seller list. That same month, the band performed for 500,000 people across the UK as part of the X Factor Live Tour. Their debut studio album, Up All Night, was released in November 2011 in the UK and Ireland, and internationally in March 2012. It became the first UK group to have their debut album reach number one in the United States, topping charts in 16 countries.

The lead single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” was a global hit, reaching number one in the UK and number four in the US, and achieving multi-platinum status in both countries. Subsequent singles “Gotta Be You” and “One Thing” were also successful in the UK. Following the album’s release, One Direction embarked on the Up All Night Tour, initially planned as a UK tour but expanded to North America and Australia due to high demand. A video album documenting the tour, Up All Night: The Live Tour, was released in May 2012. Their first American book, “Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction,” was published that same month and topped The New York Times Best Seller list.

In September 2012, One Direction released “Live While We’re Young,” the lead single from their second album, which reached the top ten in numerous countries and set a record for the highest one-week opening sales for a song by a non-US artist in the US. The second single, “Little Things,” became their second number-one single in the UK. Their second studio album, Take Me Home, was released in November 2012, selling 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and reaching number one in 35 countries.

The album’s success made One Direction the first boy band in US chart history to record two number-one albums in the same calendar year. They headlined their second tour, the Take Me Home Tour, in February 2013, performing over 100 shows worldwide and grossing $114 million. In August 2013, the documentary concert film One Direction: This Is Us was released, grossing $68.5 million. Their third book, “One Direction: Where We Are: Our Band, Our Story: 100% Official,” was released the same month.

The band’s third studio album, Midnight Memories, was released in November 2013 and became the best-selling album worldwide in 2013, with four million copies sold. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making One Direction the first band to have their first three albums debut atop the chart. The album’s lead single, “Best Song Ever,” became their highest-charting single in the US to date.

They embarked on the Where We Are Tour in 2014, their first all-stadium tour, which grossed over $290 million and was the highest-grossing tour of 2014. Their fourth book, “One Direction: Who We Are: Our Official Autobiography,” was released in September 2014, followed by their second concert film, One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film, in October 2014.

In November 2014, One Direction released their fourth album, Four, which debuted at number one in 18 countries and sold 3.2 million copies. Singles “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes” achieved platinum status in the US. In 2015, the group began the On The Road Again Tour. In 2021, he released three hip-hop tracks together dubbed Yellow Tape. RCA dropped Malik from their label later that year. In January 2023, Malik signed a new management contract with United Talent Agency and a new recording contract with Mercury Records, with plans to release new music in the summer.
