Career
In 1999, Yang made her acting debut as Zhou Qiong in Ru Ci Chu Shan. She then had a minor role as little Consort Donggo in Xiaozhuang Epic in 2002. In May 2004, Yang made her big-screen debut in the youth romance film Girl’s Diary, playing Ran Dongyang, an elementary school student. She received a Best Child Actor nomination at the Tongniu Film Awards for her performance.
Yang rose to prominence in 2005 by playing Xia Xue in the popular Mainland Chinese sitcom Home with Kids. She also played little Bing Yue in the historical costume drama Young Kangxi in March of that year. In 2006, she reprised her role as Xia Xue in the sequel Home with Kids 2.
From 2008 to 2013, Yang transitioned to teenage roles. In June 2008, she released her first solo album titled Home with Snow. She voiced Ma Xiaotiao in the comedy animation series Mo’s Mischief: Teacher’s Pet in 2009 and played her first leading role in the youth drama Girl Rushes Forward. In 2010, Yang starred in the friendship drama Boy’s Diary and was admitted to the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy. She starred in the family drama Love Comes Knocking on the Door in February 2011.
In May 2012, Yang starred in the medical drama Angel Heart and later in the horror mystery thriller film Insisrence. She won the Best Newcomer Award at the 14th Golden Phoenix Awards for her role in the film. In February 2013, Yang played the lead role in the period comedy drama King Rouge, followed by starring roles in the family drama Dad Comes Home and the romance drama Flowers in Fog in April and August, respectively.
From 2014 to 2017, Yang experienced a breakthrough in her career. She starred in the war drama Battle of Changsha in March 2014, followed by joining the second season of youth inspirational reality show We Are Young in May. In April 2015, Yang joined Dragon TV’s star travel-reality show Sisters Over Flowers and starred in the youth romance film Where Are All The Time.
She then starred in the period drama Yangko Dance and the horror mystery web series The Ferryman in October of that year. In April 2016, Yang starred in the metropolitan romance drama Ode to Joy, which received critical acclaim. She also appeared in urban romance drama Perfect Wedding, television series Noble Aspirations, and the film Crying Out in Love. In May 2017, Yang starred in the historical romance comedy drama Legend of Dragon Pearl and reprised her role in the second installment of Ode to Joy.
From 2018 to 2020, Yang gained mainstream recognition. She played guest roles in the urban drama Women in Beijing and joined the second season of Chinese youth variety show Give Me Five in April 2018. In July, she starred in The Destiny of White Snake and Ashes of Love.
In May 2019, Yang unveiled her wax figure at Madame Tussauds Beijing and starred in the e-sport romantic comedy drama Go Go Squid!. She then joined the third season of cooking reality show Chinese Restaurant 3 and featured in the disaster film The Bravest. In August, she starred in the crime suspense film Bodies at Rest and the romance environmental protection drama My Mowgli Boy.
In October 2020, Yang featured in the segment “Last Lesson” directed by Xu Zheng as part of the nationalistic film My People, My Homeland. In November, she starred in Hear Her, the first monologue series in China about women’s rights.
In February 2021, Yang played a guest role in Dt.Appledog’s Time and participated in the iQIYI detective reality show The Detectives’ Adventures in May. She also participated in the “Great Journey” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in July. In September, she was announced as one of the 6 recommendation officers for City Personification IP series. On 15 November 2021, Yang Zi established her personal studio.
In April 2022, she starred in the romance drama The Oath of Love and in July, she starred in the fantasy romance drama Immortal Samsara. In November, He Dun’s Happiness, the remaining part of Psychologist premiered. In January 2023, she signed with Confidence Entertainment and starred in costume myth drama Lost You Forever in July.
