Career

Tanya, the granddaughter of Malaysian Tamil actor Ravichandran, grew up admiring her grandfather’s work, sparking her interest in a film career. Raised in a family of artists, her mother Lavanya Sriram, a classical dancer, trained both Tanya and her sister Apparajitha in Bharathanatyam. They often showcased their skills in Chennai during their teenage years.

Before venturing into acting, Tanya completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women in Chennai and pursued a master’s degree at Madras School of Social Work.

In early 2016, Tanya successfully auditioned for a film directed by Mysskin, alongside fellow debutant actor Maitreya. Mysskin suggested she change her stage name from Abbirami to Tanya, which she agreed to. However, the film’s production was postponed to accommodate Mysskin’s other commitments.

Around August 2016, director Radha Mohan chose to screen test and sign Tanya for his film Brindavanam, hearing about her selection for Mysskin’s project. However, her first release was Balle Vellaiyathevaa (2016), a rural comedy drama co-starring Sasikumar. Despite mixed reviews, Tanya’s role received criticism for being underutilized.

Her next film, Brindavanam, released in May 2017, garnered positive reviews. The film, set in Ooty, revolves around the relationship between a deaf and dumb boy and a film actor. Tanya’s portrayal of Sandhya earned praise from critics for her bold and daring character. Following Brindavanam’s success, Tanya featured in Karuppan (2017), a rural drama alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simha.
