Career
Irani’s journey in the public eye began with her participation in the Miss India 1998 beauty pageant, although she didn’t make it to the top 9. In the same year, she appeared in the song “Boliyan” from the album “Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag” alongside Mika Singh.
Her acting career kicked off in 2000 with her debut in the TV series “Aatish” and “Hum Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal,” both airing on Star Plus. During the same period, she also appeared in the show “Kavita” on DD Metro. A significant milestone in her acting career came in the mid-2000s when she landed the lead role of Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor’s production “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” on Star Plus. This role earned her several awards, including five consecutive ITA Awards for Best Actress Popular and four Indian Telly Awards. However, her association with the show ended in June 2007 due to a fallout with producer Ekta Kapoor. She made a comeback in May 2008, reconciling with Kapoor.
In 2002, Irani portrayed the character Sita in Zee TV’s “Ramayan.” In 2006, she ventured into production, co-producing the show “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan” under her banner Ugraya Entertainment, where she also played the lead role of Uma. In 2007, she produced the TV serial “Virrudh” for Sony TV and portrayed the lead character of Vasudha. She also produced “Mere Apne” for 9X, where she portrayed the protagonist alongside Vinod Khanna. Additionally, she acted in a supporting role in Zee TV’s “Teen Bahuraaniyaan.”
In 2008, Irani co-hosted the dance-based reality show “Yeh Hai Jalwa” alongside Sakshi Tanwar on 9X. The same year, she produced another show on Zee TV, “Waaris.” In 2009, she appeared in the comedy show “Maniben.com” on SAB TV, which she also co-produced with Contiloe Entertainment. In 2012, she ventured into regional cinema with the Bengali movie “Amrita.”
In terms of her political career, Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2003 and was appointed vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth Wing in 2004. She contested in the 2004 general elections from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi but was unsuccessful. In 2004, she blamed then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for BJP’s electoral losses and threatened to fast until he resigned. However, she retracted this demand after facing threats of action from the BJP’s central leadership.
Irani was appointed as the National Secretary of BJP in early 2010 and later became the All India President of the BJP’s women’s wing, BJP Mahila Morcha. She was sworn in as a member of parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha in August 2011. In the 2014 general elections, she contested against Rahul Gandhi in the Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh but lost. However, in the 2019 general elections, she won the Lok Sabha seat from Amethi constituency, defeating Rahul Gandhi.
