Sharmila Tagore began her acting career in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar,” where she portrayed an ill-fated bride. The following year, she starred in Ray’s “Devi,” set in 1860, which she considers her favorite film and performance. She also appeared in Bengali films “Shes Anko” and “Nirjan Saikate,” winning the IFFI Best Actor Award for the latter.
In 1964, Tagore made her Hindi film debut in Shakti Samanta’s “Kashmir Ki Kali” alongside Shammi Kapoor. She later collaborated with Samanta on films like “An Evening in Paris” (1967), where she became the first Indian actress to appear in a bikini, establishing herself as a sex symbol in Hindi cinema. Tagore’s performance in “Anupama” (1966) opposite Dharmendra proved to be her breakthrough.
The 1970s marked the peak of Tagore’s career with a series of critical and commercial successes. Her pairing with Rajesh Khanna in films like “Aradhana” (1969), “Safar” (1970), and “Amar Prem” (1972) garnered widespread acclaim. She also worked with Uttam Kumar in several films during this period.
In 1975, Tagore starred in Gulzar’s “Mausam” alongside Sanjeev Kumar, earning her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in successful films opposite Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, further solidifying her status as a leading actress.
During the 1980s, Tagore continued to appear in notable films such as “Kalankini Kankabati” (1981) and “Namkeen” (1982). She reunited with Dharmendra in “Sunny” (1984), earning a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, Tagore played pivotal roles in films like “Mississippi Masala” (1991) and “Virruddh… Family Comes First” (2005), receiving critical acclaim for her performances.
After a hiatus, Tagore made a comeback in 2023 with the drama “Gulmohar,” which earned her critical acclaim and the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress (Critics) in a Web Original Film.
