Shammi Kapoor made his Hindi film debut in 1953 with “Jeewan Jyoti,” but struggled initially with roles in woman-oriented movies. Despite acting alongside established actresses like Madhubala and Nutan, none of his films gained him popularity from 1953 to 1957.
His breakthrough came with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” in 1957 and “Dil Deke Dekho” in 1959, establishing him as a light-hearted and stylish playboy. “Junglee” in 1961 further solidified his image, leading to a string of successful romantic comedies and musical thrillers in the 1960s.
In 1968, he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor for “Brahmachari.” Known for his dancing prowess, he earned the nickname “Elvis Presley of India” for his unique dance compositions. Kapoor’s successful pairing with Southern heroines contributed to his commercial success. In the late 1960s, films like “Budtameez,” “Sachaai,” and “Tumse Achha Kaun Hai” showcased his versatility.
By the 1970s, Kapoor’s weight became a hindrance to his romantic hero image, and he transitioned to supporting roles. He directed films like “Manoranjan” and “Bundal Baaz,” which received critical acclaim but were not commercial successes. In the 1980s, Kapoor continued to play supporting roles in films like “Prem Rog,” “Hero,” and “Vidhaata,” winning a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He even took on a rare negative role in the 1992 film “Tahalka.”
In the 1990s, Kapoor ventured into television with shows like “Chattan.” His film appearances reduced, with notable roles in movies like “Jaanam Samjha Karo” and “Censor.” His final film appearance was in Imtiaz Ali’s “Rockstar” in 2011, where he starred alongside his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor. Throughout his career, Kapoor was known for his humility and talent, with director Shakti Samanta praising him as a “thoroughly good man.”
